Otto von Guericke is known mostly as the discoverer of the strengh of atmospheric pressure. He made his discovery by experimenting with the so-called Magdeburg Hemispheres. Less known are his achievements in the field of atmospheric physics, as well as his numerous technological inventions. On the basis of the articles from the periodical Documenta Guerickiana, published by the international organisation Otto von Guericke Society, the author of the anniversary article describes Gu-ericke's life and his scientific activities, emphasising his achievements in field of the atmospheric physics. The current (2002) year was declared in Germany as the "Otto von Guericke Year"; the anniversary is commemorated by various events in Magdeburg and in other cities connected with Guericke's activities.
