The success of Gdańsk was connected with the launch of the Gdańsk Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) in 2007. Construction works of the terminal started at the end of 2005. The first stage was completed in October 2007. The deep-sea direct approach and land infrastructure with an access road and a railway line, railway siding, a cargo handling wharf and specialised ramp for ro-ro cargo handling technology allowed for operational start up. The cooperation of DTC with the world leading container carrier – Maersk led to the development in Gdańsk of the first Baltic hub port. In 2008, DCT ranked second in Poland in terms of volume having won over 25% of the Polish market in maritime container handling, and starting 2010 it took the lead. On May 11, 2011 mv Maersk Elba, the first of a series of the biggest container vessels ever to call Polish ports, with a capacity of 13 thous. TEU entered Gdańsk DCT. The vessel initiated regular calls of successive vessels (of a capacity reaching 15.5 thous. TEU) such as mv Maersk Eubank, mv Eleonora Maersk itp. The record container handling figure of 47153 TEU was set in September 2010. The success of Gdańsk DCT and the Baltic revolution triggered by Maersk indicates that this model may quickly find other Baltic followers.
