Tsunami event identified in a sedimentary record of the Gaza Strip, Palestine

The outcrop of the tsunami deposits, about 6 m thick, is located in the archaeological site Tel Askan in the Al Zhraa locality, southwest of the Gaza City. These deposits are unconformably underlain by sand dunes and sharply overlain by a palaeosol. They are pale gray sands mixed with volcanic ash and fine-grained deposits, and are intercalated with peat, few centimetres thick. The sand-sized grains are well rounded and well sorted, and consist mainly of quartz and subordinate of feldspar. Both macro- and microfossils were observed from tsunami deposits. Additionally, rip-up clasts and pottery shards were observed, indicating higher-flow regime. The potteries in tsunami deposits provide evidence for tsunami inundation at distance of about 1 km from the present shoreline.

The use of weaponized kites and balloons in the Israeli – Palestinian conflict

Objectives: The aim of this paper is to analyse the use of weaponised incendiary kites and helium balloons in the Israeli-Palestinian hostilities between March and December 2018. The paper argues that arson started with incendiary kites and balloons can easily be exploited for terrorist purposes and poses a serious challenge for regular armed forces and for civilian emergency services. Methods: The paper examines the Palestinian ‘Great March of Return’ as a background for the development of a new Hamas’ tactic and briefly describes the chronology of arson terrorism in the context of other hostilities at the Gaza-Israeli border. The study focuses on the two following questions: why are the kites and balloons useful for the current goals of Hamas and how do the Israelis respond to this new threat? The study uses comparative scientific literature and document analysis, the analysis of statements released by the Israeli authorities and the Israeli media reports related to the arson attacks. Results: The main findings include the role of simple, non-lethal weapons in spreading fear for terrorist purposes and the advantages of turning everyday-use materials into weapons in a situation where there is limited access to regular arms. The second part of the study deals with the effects of arson attacks on the Israeli side of the conflict and the countermeasures undertaken in the Gaza Periphery. The author concludes that airborne arson attacks pose a serious threat to advanced Israeli defence systems, solely because of their primitive and unpredictable character. Conclusions: The overall findings of this paper present the threat of arson terrorism in the context of an asymmetric conflict.

W artykule stwierdza się, że działania organizacji Hamas mają wymiar globalny, bowiem to, co dzieje się w jednym końcu świata, wywiera niewątpliwy wpływ na sytuację nie tylko w miejscach i terenach ościennych, lecz także tych położonych w drugim zakątku świata, gdyż współczesny człowiek żyje w świecie globalnym. Dlatego działania terrorystów Hamasu naruszają prawa każdego człowieka, bez względu na miejsce pobytu. Wydarzenia, jakie toczą się w Strefie Gazy, stanowią nie tylko o stanie praw człowieka w tych właśnie miejscach, ale wywierają realny wpływ na to, jak prawa człowieka przestrzegane są na całym świecie. Islamski Ruch Oporu jest organizacją terrorystyczną, która od kilku lat rządzi państwem palestyńskim. Od momentu powstania do czasów współczesnych organizacja przeszła ewolucję, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do metod działania. W ostatnich latach dramatycznie wzrosły role polityczna i społeczna organizacji Hamas. Zauważyć to można na przykładzie wprowadzanych przez organizację coraz bardziej restrykcyjnych przepisów wobec społeczeństwa, zwłaszcza wobec kobiet. Zmiana ról społecznej i politycznej Hamasu w regionie wpłynęła na zmianę metod i sposobów działania. Islamski Ruch Oporu w znacznym stopniu ograniczył krwawe zamachy terrorystyczne, porwania oraz inne techniki terroryzmu na rzecz rozmów, negocjacji oraz dialogu. Ponadto próby utworzenia rządu jedności narodowej oraz pokojowe konferencje zmierzają do uznania rządu przez społeczność międzynarodową.

The article states that activity of the organization Hamas has a global dimension, because what happens at one end of the globe has a definite impact on the situation, and not only to neighboring areas, but also to those located in the other corners of the world, because contemporary man is living in a global world. Therefore, Hamas terrorists violate the rights of every human being, regardless the place of residence. The events that are happening in the Gaza Strip are not only about the state of hu-man rights in these places, but have a real impact on how human rights are respected throughout the world. The Islamic Resistance Movement is a terrorist organization, which has ruled over Palestinian state for several years. From its rising to the present organization has evolved, particularly with regard to working methods. In recent years the political and social roles of organization Hamas has dramatically increased. It’s evident - the example is introducing by the organization more and more restrictive rules to society, especially to women. Changing social and political roles of Hamas in the region has changed the methods and ways of activity. The Islamic Resistance Movement greatly reduced the bloody bombings, kidnappings and other terrorist techniques for discussions, negotiations and dialogue. In addition, attempts to form a government of national unity and peaceful conferences aim to make the government legitimate by the international community.

W artykule przedstawiono narastanie napięcia politycznego w stosunkach między Izraelem a Autonomią Palestyńską w latach 2008-2009 oraz wewnętrzne konflikty pomiędzy ugrupowaniami palestyńskimi Fatah i Hamas. Wydarzenia ostatnich miesięcy tego okresu pokazały, że dotychczasowe koncepcje pokojowe dotyczące Bliskiego Wschodu polegające na idei współistnienia dwóch państw (two states living side by side in peace and security) nie powiodły się. Nie udało się wprowadzić w życie postanowień konferencji pokojowej w Annapolis z 2007 roku. Eskalacja sporu doprowadziła do brutalnej interwencji Izraela w Strefie Gazy w grudniu 2008 roku, co pociągnęło za sobą setki niewinnych ofiar. Kwestia palestyńska zaktywizowała dyplomację europejską, w tym szczególnie Francję do bardziej czynnego zaangażowania się w wysiłki zmierzające do wygaszenia konfliktu. Pokój na Bliskim Wschodzie jest wielkim wyzwaniem dla państw Unii Europejskiej.

The paper presents the growing political tension between Israel and Palestinian Autonomy and in the years 2008-2009 and internal conflicts between Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas. The events that occurred in the last months of that period showed that the idea of two states living side by side in peace and security has failed. Resolutions of the peace conference in Annapolis, 2007, were not put into effect. The escalation of the dispute led to the brutal intervention by Israel in the Gaza Strip in December 2008 which resulted in hundreds of innocent victims. The Palestinian issue made European diplomacy, especially French diplomacy, become more involved in efforts aimed at resolving the conflict. Peace in the Middle East is a great challenge for the European Union.
