Over three thousand specimens representing the superfamily Trochoidea Rafinesque, 1815 [Trochidae Rafinesque, 1815 and Calliostomatidae Thiele, 1924 (1847)] from the upper Upper Badenian = Kosovian = lower Serra vallian (middle Miocene) marine deposits of Ukraine, housed in the collections of the Polish Academy of Sciences Museum of the Earth in Warsaw (MZ), are studied herein. The abundant material has allowed for investigations of the intraspecific variation and revision of earlier determinations. As a result, 21 species belonging to 5 genera have been identified, described and illustrated, of which one is new [Clanculus (Clanculopsis) krachi sp. nov.] and one is left in open nomenclature. Granulifera O. Anistratenko, 2000 is considered a junior subjective synonym of Clanculopsis Monterosato, 1879; Granulifera pulla O. Anistratenko, 2000 is considered a junior subjective synonym of Monodonta tuberculata Eichwald, 1830; Gibbula sytovae Amitrov, 1961 is considered a junior subjective synonym of Trochus miocaenicus Mayer, 1853; Gibbula volhynica Friedberg, 1928 is considered a junior subjective synonym of Trochus novemcinctus von Buch, 1830; and Trochus buchii du Bois de Montpéreux, 1831 is suppressed in favour of the senior subjective synonym Trochus puschii Andrzejowski, 1830. The geographic distribution and stratigraphic ranges of the taxa are given. Six species are known only from the Polish-Ukrainian part of the Fore-Carpathian Basin. The protoconch features are systematically studied in the Trochidae and Calliostomatidae from this area for the first time.

A new ichnogenus and ichnospecies (Solealites ovalis) of etching trace is preserved on the surfaces of clasts from the Savignone Conglomerate (Oligocene) in the Palaeogene Piemonte Basin in NW Italy. It is a shallow, oval depression with a central elevation, which was produced probably by limpet gastropods and served as their home scar, but other gastropods or even sea anemones are not excluded as the trace makers. The conglomerate is interpreted as a deposit of a fan delta, whose clasts have been bioeroded in an intertidal and shallow subtidal shore zone and redeposited to the deeper sea.

In the course of the study two bivalve species protected in Poland were found in the River Stepnica: Sphaerium solidum and Sphaerium rivicola. Moreover, the study material collected from the river contained gastropod and bivalve specimens representing the following species from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Theodoxus fluviatilis, Pisidium henslowanum, Pisidium casertanum and Pisidium pseudosphaerium.

A zigzag colour pattern with additional collabral belts and irregular spots was observed on a shell of Naticopsis (N.) planispira (Phillips, 1836) found in the Gołonóg Sandstone marine faunal horizon (Namurian A, the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, Poland). A disruption in the colour pattern was also observed to have occurred during ontogenetic shell growth. In this specimen, it appeared in the healed shell damage on the outer lip. So far, only nine Carboniferous species of Naticopsis have been reported with the colour pattern preserved. The most common are the zigzag-type and the spiral band-type. Individual taxa clearly differ in the morphology of the chevrons (direction and angles of breaks) and the location and width of the spiral bands on a whorl. However, the color patterns may not be diagnostic features for the Naticopsis species, because of the large intraspecific variation and colour pattern polymorphism on the neritimorph shells. Colour patterns on Palaeozoic neritimorph shells most likely served as camouflage with respect to the bottom surface in the photic zone.

Amongst several known Paleozoic gastropod species having transverse septa in the apical parts of shells, three species (Straparollus aff. circularis, Orecopia kadzielniae and Donaldiella karczewskii) have been found in the Frasnian limestones of Grabina and Bolechowice-Panek in the Holy Cross Mountains (Central Poland). Septation in gastropod shells is a rare phenomenon and is an adaptive feature. Septa occur either in the thick-shelled gastropods living in high-energetic (reef) environments, preventing against negative effects of destruction of the apical parts of shells, or in the thin-shelled gastropods living on muddy substrate, lowering the inner volume of a habitable part of shell and increasing outer surface of gastropod body.

The results of detailed morphological studies on Rissoa sobieskii from the Badenian of the eastern Central Paratethys are presented. Its paucispiral protoconch with a bulbous embryonic shell indicates it to have had a lecithotrophic (non-planktotrophic) larval development, apparently lacking even a short free-swimming larval stage. This contrasts with all other known Miocene Rissoa species, which have shell features indicating a planktotrophic larval stage. The peculiarity of R. sobieskii is also supported by its characteristic narrowing of the aperture and almost complete lack of teleoconch sculpture. The time coincidence of the appearance of the non-planktotrophic species with distinct changes in salinity of the badenian basin suggests that the alteration (.switching.) of the type of early ontogeny from planktotrophic to non-planktotrophic development could have been an environmentally induced phenomenon.

Research was conducted to determine the effect of various oil derivatives on selected groups of invertebrates - atmobionts, representatives of Diplopoda, Chilopoda, Gastropoda and Isopoda. Possibility was also assessed of using them as potential bioindicators of soil contamination with petroleum derivatives. Fauna was trapped on: soil contaminated with petrol, diesel oil, used engine oil and on unpolluted soil (Control). The pollutant substances were used in the amount of 2 dm'/m2. One Barber's trap was placed in the centre of each microplot. The traps were emptied once a week from May until October 2003 and from May to September 2004. Soil contamination with the analyzed oil derivatives does not negatively influence the occurrence of Diplopoda, Chilopoda and Isopoda representatives. The soil pollution with oil derivatives limit the numbers of atmobionts. The length of this negative effect for petrol and used engine oil is about 3 weeks, whereas for diesel oil it may last longer and become apparent only after 4 months since the moment of soil pollution. The negative effect of oil derivatives on Gastropoda representatives may become evident only after several months since the moment of contamination. Petrol had the least negative effect upon this group. From among the analyzed invertebrate groups, the atmobionts and Gastropoda could be potential bioindicators of pollution. However, more detailed research in this area is necessary.

Analiza paleontologiczna 46 próbek z otworu wiertniczego w Koczarkach wykazała obecność różnorodnych szczątków zwierząt: mięczaków, małżoraczków, ryb i owadów.
