The author of the article presents the person, social and political activities and basic outline of ethical doctrine of one of the most distinguished moralists of the 20th century. Ghandi, who created and consequently introduced the concept of fighting without violence, being directed by the purest moral motives, all his life tended to achieve two strategic goals: to gain independence by India and implement such social reforms that would ensure ordinary people a decent life. The article focuses on detailed assumptions of Mahatma’s ethical concept, particularly such postulates as ahimsy (kindness, the principle of not inflicting evil), equality (egalitarian justice), and personal perfectionism (ascetic way of life, fighting with “desires of the body”). Among these postulates ahimsy has been described most widely as this principle includes three issues: obligation to protect people against evil, obligation of kindness towards the enemy, and also obligation to fight without violence, that has been discussed in detail. In the conclusion the author states that in spite of some inconsequences and hesitations, Ghandi deserved a high place in the pantheon of the greatest people of the last century due to his whole active life for the good of others.
