He is the President of the Polish Association for Spatial Information and editor in chief of the scientific magazine Annuals of Geomatics. Professor is the author of original concepts of theoretical and practical importance in geomatics and of several methods and algorithms for geodetic data processing. He has particular achievements in the field of geoinformation systems, with which he has been involved for nearly 40 years. His scientific and technical scientific works are abundant and include ca. 300 scientific publications in Polish, English, German and Spanish. At present, his interests are focused on spatial information infrastructures . he took part in preparation of the INSPIRE Directive and initiated several actions supporting preparation and implementation of this Directive in Poland. Professor Jerzy Ga.dzicki was born on 15 October 1931 in Zamo.ć in an educated family. He passed his school-leaving examinations in 1950 and he finished his studies at the of Geodesy and Cartography Faculty of the Warsaw University of Technology in 1954. His scientific career began with doctorate at the same University in 1961 followed by the title of associate professor in 1966, extraordinary professor in 1974 and ordinary professor in 1982. He received many prizes and awards, including the State Prize of 2nd degree in 1978; he was distinguished by an honorary title of the Master of Polish Techniques in 1973. Already during his studies he began his work as assistant lecturer in the Chair of Mathematics. As a pupil of prominent scientist and author of cracovian calculus, professor Stefan Hausbrandt, he became his assistant, and later his successor in the Chair of Adjustment Calculus and Geodetic Calculations at the Warsaw University of Technology (1955.1968). Later on he was the head of department in the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography (1968.1974), creator and scientific director of the Informatics Centre of Geodesy and Cartography (1974.1986), director of the Institute of Higher Geodesy and Geodetic Astronomy of the Warsaw University of Technology (1981.1986), elected by employees representing social movement Solidarity. He then joined the Faculty of Geodetic Engineering at the Delft University of Technology (1986.1998), was an expert of the European Commission among others in Slovakia (1994.1997) and an expert of the World Bank among others in Turkey (2000. 2002). Scientific work aptly combined with social activities are his passion and fill his life. He called to being and for many years was the chairman of the Club of IT Users in Geodesy (1970.1990), and then he transformed it into an interdisciplinary Polish Association for Spatial Information. He created and chaired for 20 years the Section of Geodetic and Cartographic Informatics of the Geodesy Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He took an active part in the activities of national and international organizations, among others, Association of Polish Surveyors, Polish Federation of Engineering Associations . NOT, Warsaw Scientific Society as well as FIG (International Federation of Surveyors) IAG (International Association of Geodesy), UDMS (Urban Data Management Society) and EUROLIS (The European Co-operation Network for Education and Research in Land Information Systems). Professor Jerzy Ga.dzicki enjoys general recognition and respect. The life and work of Professor has been and will be of particular importance for us . his alumni . employees and collaborators from the Informatics Centre of Geodesy and Cartography, whom he shaped and had undeniable influence on their further professional carriers.
