Geographical information systems support any forms of activities executed in spatial dimension. They play a specific role and have a special importance in the sphere of activities ensuring national security. The complexity of the security issues and the variety of needs in this respect as well as circumstances related to Poland's participation in NATO and EU structures indicate the need to take action in order to develop interdisciplinary and multidimensional integrated GIS for the requirements of Poland’s security system. The special message here was the need to build a coherent and effective geo-information structure of the nation for the use of national security management, to include crisis management. It defines a National Security Geo-Information System and formulates basic requirements for such a system, which shall function as a special-purpose spatial data infrastructure linked to geo-spatial information systems and infrastructures at national and international levels. The article is a fragment of a scientific research work implemented in the National Defence Academy and it is the application of creating a concept of the Geo-Information System of National Security (GSBN).

The available geospatial information technology can provide data that is needed to confront a wide variety of threats identified by the Polish National Security Strategy confidently. The paper proposes to make appropriate use of them technological opportunities. It defines a National Security Geoinformation System and formulates basic requirements for such a system, which shall function as a special-purpose spatial data infrastructure linked to geospatial information system and infrastructures at national and international levels.
