The article presents the reasons and the entire process of work on the modernization of the GMDSS system. The main legal and technical aspects of the modernization of the GMDSS system were discussed as well. New devices and systems of the modernized GMDSS system were described. On the basis of the key points of the modernized GMDSS, an attempt was made to evaluate the entire project.

The article presents the progress of work on the e-navigation project carried out by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Progress of the work on the second project carried out by the IMO is also described, related to e-navigation and involving modernization of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). In addition to the description of these projects, their mutual relationship is also presented, as well as the timetable for implementing their stages.

Basing on a general concept, the main functions and the international requirements the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) have been presented. The modifications of the system since its implementation and its current status have been described. The future of the GMDSS has been discussed as well.

In the paper some radiocommunication issues concerning Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in respect of the e - Navigation have been described. Some aspects of the existing technical and regulation constraints and limitations referring to GMDSS equipment and systems have been given. The issues relating to the need of GMDSS modernization taking into account new technology and the discussion on the e-Navigation program have been presented.
