In this study, the beneficiation performance of chrome from the high carbon ferrochrome slag (HCFS) was evaluated. The mineralogical characteristics of HCFS was investigated first, and then HCFS was treated by magnetic separation, gravity separation, magnetic-gravity combined separation, and gravity separation after grinding respectively, to recover the Cr2O3. Finally, the Fuerstenau upgrading curves were used to evaluate the separation performance of different separation processes. The results indicated that the gravity separation process with a proper grinding condition gave the optimum beneficiation performance. A concentrate product with 30.18% Cr2O3 grade and 22.52% recovery was obtained from the HCFS.

Comparison of flotation performance between the flotation column and mechanical flotation was carried out to promote the grade and economic value of the graphite ore (15.40% ash content). The ash content of the concentrate of the mechanical flotation was 10.77% at the yield of 79.34%. In contrast, the yield of the concentrate of the column flotation was increased to 88.93% with 10.55% ash content. Comparative study of the Fuerstenau upgrading curves indicated that the column flotation was more efficient for cleaning the graphite ore in the presence of the centrifugal force field, nanobubbles (generated by hydrodynamic cavitation), and the thicker froth layer in comparison with the mechanical flotation.

The flotation behavior of hard-to-separate and high-ash fine coal was investigated using conventional flotation with constant power input. A new flotation process, based on energy input and distribution, was designed to lower the ash content of concentrate. The results obtained using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis show that the coal samples have good floatability because of many hydrophobic and few hydrophilic functional groups. Under a constant power input, a large number of ash-forming materials floated into a froth product at the start of flotation. Based on the Fuerstenau upgrading curves, it was determined that the 0.25-0.074 mm size fraction range showed the worst selectivity when compared with 0.50-0.25 mm and -0.074 mm size fractions. The desired concentrate with an ash content of 13.98%, 27.59% of ash recovery, and 80.01% combustible matter recovery could be obtained by transferring the excess energy of the flotation-conditioning stage to the pre-conditioning stage and increasing the power input step-by-step in the flotation-conditioning stage at equal total energy consumption.
