A new genetic algorithm and operators for the State Assignment Problem (SAP) are presented. The Finite State Machine (FSM) synthesis for minimum area, targeted to Complex Programmable Logic Devices, exactly - to MAX devices manufactured by Altera [Alt00], is chosen. Experiments done for several MCNC benchmark FSMs synthesized in Altera Multiple Array MartiX Programmable Logic User System (MAX+PLUS II) showed results up to 63% better than generated by MAX+PLUS II.
