The article highlights the issue of teaching English military terminology in uniformed classes. It draws the conclusions on conducting authorial military terminology syllabus in one of the schools carrying out the pedagogical innovation, which has assumed patronage of Polish Air Force Academy (PAFA). Military classes gained a huge popularity, having met the youth’s interest in armed for ces they became a key element in national defense education.

Minimalist grammars have been used recently in a series of papers to explain well-known contrasts in human sentence processing in terms of subtle structural differences. These proposals combine a top-down parser with complexity metrics that relate parsing difficulty to memory usage. So far, though, there has been no large-scale exploration of the space of viable metrics. Building on this earlier work, we compare the ability of 1,600 metrics to derive several processing effects observed with relative clauses, many of which have been proven difficult to unify. We show that among those 1,600 candidates, a few metrics (and only a few) can provide a unified account of all these contrasts. This is a welcome result for two reasons: First, it provides a novel account of extensively studied psycholinguistic data. Second, it significantly limits the number of viable metrics that may be applied to other phenomena, thus reducing theoretical indeterminacy.

We present a finite-state technology (FST) based system capable of performing metrical scansion of verse written in English. Scansion is the traditional task of analyzing the lines of a poem, marking the stressed and non-stressed elements and dividing the line into metrical feet. The system’s workflow is composed of several subtasks designer around finite-state machines that analyze verse by performing tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, stress placement, and stress-pattern prediction for unknown words. The scanner also classifies poems according to the predominant type of metrical foot found. We present a brief evaluation of the system using a gold standard corpus of humanscanned verse, on which a per-syllable accuracy of 86.78% is achieved. The program uses open-source components and is released under the GNU GPL license.
