The absolute chronology of Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages in Polish territories is a result of long-term and complex research. Here, we have investigated the absolute dating of two sites, namely Kłyżów, a cemetery of the Tarnobrzeg Lusatian culture, and Jarosław, a settlement spanning from the late phase of the former to Pomeranian culture, possibly with Jastorf elements. Having been spurred by promising results of thermoluminescence (TL) dating of medieval and Przeworsk materi-als, we have employed it in those situations, where no other chronometric methods seem to be effi-cient. TL dating has been combined with typological analysis of the dated pottery and, partially, with radiocarbon method. Albeit the produced TL dates do not represent the level of sought-for fine chron-ological resolution, they indicate the temporal trends and corroborate the typological research. Our study has shown the potential of TL dating for periods with plateaus on 14C calibration curve. We also have dealt with unexpected TL ages and suggested some solutions of the problem. Finally, we have demonstrated that the condition sine qua non for archaeological interpretation of TL dates is a thor-ough stylistic-chronological analysis of dated pottery and clear understanding of relations between chronometric dates and the archaeological event to be dated.

Badania ratownicze prowadzone w latach 1997-2000 w związku z budową autostrady A-4, przyniosły m.in. odkrycie dużego wielokulturowego kompleksu stanowisk: Polwica 4 i 5 oraz Skrzypnik 8, gm. Domaniów, funkcjonującego także w okresie istnienia kultury przeworskiej. Dostarczyły one wielu interesujących odkryć i artefaktów, w tym ceramiki tzw. grafitowanej, wyróżniającej się intensywnie czarną barwą powierzchni. Tę specyficzną kategorię źródeł ceramicznych poddano badaniom specjalistycznym, zmierzającym do wyjaśnienia składu wierzchniej powłoki oraz techniki jej nanoszenia. Wyniki badań dziesięciu okazów naczyń ceramicznych oraz próby eksperymentalne przeprowadzone na współczesnych próbkach, pozwoliły rozpoznać barwną powłokę jako warstwę składającą się z pylistego grafitu pochodzenia mineralnego, naniesioną na wilgotny, surowy czerep techniką wcierania. Uzyskane wyniki stanowią ciekawy przyczynek, wzbogacający naszą wiedzę o technologii warsztatów produkujących ceramikę bez użycia koła, przydatny także do szerszych studiów nad tradycjami i uwarunkowaniami kulturowymi lokalnego garncarstwa kultury przeworskiej.

The rescue research carried out in years 1997-2000 connected with the construction of the A-4 motorway led to the discovery of a big multiculture complex of sites: Polwica 4 and 5 as well as Skrzypnik 8, community of Domaniów, which was in use also in the period of the Przeworsk culture existence. The research was a source of a lot of interesting discoveries and artifacts, including the so called graphited ceramics, with distinctly black colour of the surface. This specific category of ceramic sources was subject to specialist analyses, which were aimed at establishing the composition of the surface layer and the technique of its application. The results of analyzing ten ceramic vessels and experiments carried out on contemporary samples made it possible to determine that the hued layer was composed of powered mineral graphite, applied to the wet raw vessel by means of the rubbing technique. The obtained results enrich our knowledge of technology of workshops producing ceramics without using potter's wheel and will be usefull also in broader studies on traditions and cultural conditions of the local pottery-making of the Przeworsk culture.
