In this paper, a study of the lightning phenomenon and its harmful effect on Aqaba Thermal Power Station (ATPS), located in the south-western border of Jordan, is presented using the Electromagnetic Transients Program – Alternative Transients Program (EMTPATP). This study has been arisen due to an installation need of appropriate lightning arresters (LAs) for the 15/410 kV step-up transformers of the ATPS to eliminate the destructive effect of lightning. The simulation is carried out for two cases, once without using LAs and once more with using them. Two scenarios are applied for each of these cases, once when lightning strikes the primary side of the transformer and once more when it strikes the secondary side. The results obtained by the simulation indicate the necessity of LAs installation. This study, with using the EMTP-ATP program, is done for the first time with additional details that help researchers, designers, and engineers to get a broad overview of the ATPS in order to protect it against lightning.

Electric arc is a complex phenomenon occurring during the current interruption process in the power system. Therefore performing digital simulations is often necessary to analyse transient conditions in power system during switching operations. This paper deals with the electric arc modelling and its implementation in simulation software for transient analyses during switching conditions in power system. Cassie, Cassie-Mayr as well as Schwarz-Avdonin equations describing the behaviour of the electric arc during the current interruption process have been implemented in EMTP-ATP simulation software and presented in this paper. The models developed have been used for transient simulations to analyse impact of the particular model and its parameters on Transient Recovery Voltage in different switching scenarios: during shunt reactor switching-off as well as during capacitor bank current switching-off. The selected simulation cases represent typical practical scenarios for inductive and capacitive currents breaking, respectively.

This paper deals with frequency-dependent surge arresters models and transmission lines models utilized for insulation coordination studies. Simulations have performed by means of EMTP/ATP software. Various frequency-dependent surge arresters models and transmission lines models have been compared in this article. Simulations of lightning transient in analyzed power system have been performed and results presented in this paper for various surge arrester and overhead line models. Influence of models application during calculations on simulation results has also been analyzed.

Artykuł dotyczy modelowania zmienno-częstotliwościowych modeli ograniczników przepięć oraz modeli linii przesyłowych, stosowanych do obliczeń koordynacji izolacji przy użyciu programu symulacyjnego EMTP/ATP. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono wyniki symulacji przepięć podczas wyładowań piorunowych w rozpatrywanej sieci elektrycznej. Obliczenia przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem różnych modeli ograniczników przepięć oraz linii przesyłowych, w celu porównania wpływu zastosowanego modelu ograniczników przepięć i linii przesyłowych, na wyniki symulacji.

The paper deals with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL), which are widely used by electricity consumers and with problems related to harmonics generation by CFLs in electric power networks. Additionally, typical electric diagram of CFL, registered current waveform and its analysis for single CFL, as well as numerical model of CFL in EMTP/ATP program are presented in the article. Model of CFL developed for EMTP/ATP simulation software may be useful for simulations related to influence of collective impact of CFLs installed into power network on power quality.

Artykuł dotyczy problematyki generacji zaburzeń harmonicznych przez świetlówki kompaktowe (CFLs) przyłączone do sieci niskiego napięcia. W artykule przedstawiono budowę świetlówki kompaktowej oraz dokonano opisu przebiegów pobieranego przez nią prądu, jak również przedstawiono model tego źródła światła jako odbiornika energii elektrycznej, opracowany w programie EMTP/ATP. Model może być wykorzystany do symulacji wpływu dużej liczby świetlówek na jakość energii elektrycznej w pewnej przykładowej sieci dystrybucyjnej.

This paper presents the method of calculation of the electric and magnetic fields under overhead transmission line with any number of circuits, phase positions, voltages and current loads. Calculations of this type usually require specialized and costly programs. The program EMTP/ATP is a royalty free tool to calculate the electric transient and steady states in complex power systems. You can use this program and through appropriate modeling the multi-phase wire system representing the line and measurement device calculate the strength of the electric and magnetic fields. The results of calculations are characterized by a very small error compared to the results obtained by using the specialized commercial program. This method can be used with other popular engineering tools like Matlab/Simulink or PSCad.

The mechanical data of turbines and a generator of 1000 MW reference unit, working at overcritical parameters, were established. Using the modal method, the characteristic frequencies of torsional oscillations in shafts of rotating masses were calculated. The values of torsional torques in shafts which can arise during faults in electrical networks, like close distance short-circuits, the action of automatic reclosing, synchronization, as well influence of electromagnetic torques from the network side causing the resonance oscillations of unit were investigated.

W artykule omówiono przyczyny i skutki nieprawi-dłowego działania automatyki zabezpieczeniowej podczas wystą-pienia doziemienia w sieci średniego napięcia z izolowanym punktem neutralnym. Dla identyfikacji przyczyn błędnego działania automatyki zabezpieczeniowej przeprowadzono analizę obliczenio-wą rzeczywistego zdarzenia zarejestrowanego w układzie elektroenergetycznym. Symulacje przeprowadzone zostały przy pomocy programu The Electromagnetic Transients Program - Alternative Transients Program (EMTP-ATP).
