African countries in the 1960s began to recover their independence. These facts coincided with the good results in raw materials findings of the Polish geologists and geophysicists. Therefore, in the 1960s and 1970s, geologists of the Polish Geological Institute and other companies indicated their presence in the research works in several countries of the African continent. Nowadays, the EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) members with the support from the Organization of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) prepared a strategy for sustainable strengthening of African countries’geological administrations. The strategy focuses on natural resources governance, enforcing sustainable mineral resources exploitation as well as preventing and mitigating natural disasters by establishing long-term strategic cooperation relationships in these areas. EGS, on behalf of the European Commission’s DG Development and Cooperation (DEVCO) and with the support and additional supervision of DG ENTR, was requested to cooperate with the OAGS to develop, over a period of about twelve months, a feasibility study focusing on one key priority of the EU-Africa Strategy Action Plan 2011-13, which is to "foster fur ther co-operation between African and European geological surveys”. As the result of this cooperation the identification of the Africa’s challenges in geological knowledge and skills has been done, that emerged by analysis of targeted information derivedfrom questionnaires distributed via OAGS to their members.

The paper presents the results of thermal analyzes such as thermal conductivity and specific heat, carried out on samples of sedimentary rocks (sandstones, limestones, siltstones) taken from deep boreholes located in the central part of the Polish Lowlands. This area, covers the Mogilno-Łódź Trough region and a small part of the Kujawy Swell and Fore-Sudetic regions, was selected as a potential location for EGS installation in sedimentary rocks. In the selected area, prospects for building closed geothermal systems have been indicated in the Middle Triassic, Lower Triassic, Lower Permian and Carboniferous rocks. Thermal analyzes on the rock samples were performed. Thermal conductivity was designated for 24 samples from six wells. All values were measured for dry samples in two directions: perpendicular and parallel. Specific heat was designated for 20 samples from eleven wells. Sandstones are characterized by a maximum thermal parameters.

In the years 2010-2013, analysis of rocks that build the sedimentary covers in Poland was carried out from the point of view of energy utilization accumulated in hot dry rocks – used in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). As a result of a number of analytical studies, the area situated in the central part of Poland was selected as one of prospective areas for location of EGS in sedimentary rocks. This area encompasses a major part of the Mogilno-Łódź Trough, a part of the Kujawy Swell and a small fragment of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. The most favourable conditions for development of EGS occur in deposits of the Lower Triassic in the Krośniewice-Kutno vicinity where they are buried to depths greater than 5000 m b.s.l., have thicknesses exceeding 1500 m and are characterized by porosity about 2.5% and permeability about 0.1 mD. In the selected area, thermal characterization of the formation was carried out for location of the EGS in sedimentary rocks. The temperature at the top of Lower Triassic reservoir is in the range 165-175°C. Characterization of petrophysical parameters constituted the basis for further modelling of EGS utilization in selected area.
