Establishing a chronology of events is a critical step in reconstructing the palaeoclimate and it is important for all types of environmental records, including speleothems. Here, we analysed a unique series of flowstones deposited between 3.2 Ma (marine isotope stage (MIS) Km3) and 0.08 Ma (MIS 5). The studied flowstones are located in a classic karstic environment, the Račiška Pečina Cave in south-western Slovenia. Further, a detailed chronology of events was constructed based on oxygen isotope stratigraphy (OIS), combined with magnetostratigraphy and U-series dating. Two curves were selected as reference records where the LR04 record was used as the global curve and a Mediterranean record was used as the regional curve. The Račiška Pečina profile was divided into two segments separated by a principal disconformity. The lower segment correlated better with the regional Mediterranean curve, while the upper segment was with the global LR04 curve. These findings suggest that the main factors controlling environmental conditions in the cave area changed between 3.2 and 0.8 million years ago.

The Shkoder Lake is located in the Dinarides, in the southern part the Dinaric-Adriatic Carbonate Platform. The relief of this platform surface was shaped by tectonic processes, followed by karst phenomena. The lake fill the through of the vast karst polje. The earstquakes observed in this area are related to the tectonic lines cutting deeply into the basement. The landscape and unique faunistic-floristic assemblages are protected by law.

Initial tectonic movements of Adriatic Microplate result in dominating compression in the area ofDinarides. Collected structural data, compared with surface and depth data, with seismological and geodetic measurements taken in the account enabled the classifications of structures. Deformations and movements of structures directly depend on the stress orientation. This orientation varies from between 340-160° to 30-210°. In order to visualize the stress orientation, formation of different types of structures and their movements, examples of compressional structures are shown, as well as rotations of structures and conditions of creation of extensional structures. Finally, the map with fault zones is included, too. The data show narrowing of the area of Adriatic Microplate and the existence of its southern and northern part. Both parts are changing movement directions, leading to more tectonic activity. In active areas, formation of structures is recognised, and causality with fault locations and seismic activity is established. The amplitudes of tectonic movements derived from geodetic measurements between 1994 and 1998 represent important contribution for better understanding the tectonic activities in the area.
