Subjective Assessment of the Speech Signal Quality Broadcasted by Local Digital Radio in Selected Locations in Wroclaw under Studio and Home Conditions

In October 2018, local digital radio was launched to cover the agglomeration of Wroclaw. The implementation of this undertaking required many tests, including qualitative ones, that refer to both music and speech. This paper presents the results of subjective tests based on the evaluation of speech quality of signals recorded at various points in Wroclaw. Measurements were carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union as well as in ordinary acoustic conditions in listeners’ flats. The rating was made for male and female voices. The most important conclusion is that for speech signal assessment in meaning of the quality the test conditions do not influence the obtained results. The other fact confirmed in the experiment was that the receiving place of DAB+ signal in the Single-Frequency Network also does not affect the perceived voice quality.

Standard DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting plus) jest wiodącym systemem naziemnej radiofonii cyfrowej. W porównaniu do analogowej radiofonii FM wszystkie usługi, obejmujące tradycyjne programy radiowe oraz usługi transmisji danych, grupowane są w zbiór (ensemble). Praca ta przedstawia proces rekonfiguracji polskiego multipleksu na przykładzie lokalnej radiofonii DAB+ w Gdańsku i Wrocławiu. Opisuje wyniki badań subiektywnych dotyczących jakości programów radiowych nadawanych jednocześnie w technice cyfrowej i analogowej.

The DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting plus) system is one of the leading standards of terrestrial digital broadcasting. Compared with analog FM radio, all services, including traditional audio programs as well as additional data services, are grouped in an ensemble. This paper describes the process of reconfiguring the Polish multiplex on the example of local DAB+ radio in Gdansk and Wroclaw. It presents results of a subjective quality study, concerning broadcasting in both digital and analog techniques.

Kwestia zapewnienia odpowiedniego pokrycia sygnałem multipleksu jest kluczowym aspektem zarówno dla nadawców publicznych jak i prywatnych, a w szczególności lokalnych stacji zainteresowanych procesem cyfryzacji. W pracy przedstawiono geoinformatyczne narzędzie, umożliwiające badanie zasięgu lokalnych stacji nadawczych radiofonii cyfrowej DAB+. Analizę przeprowadzono dla pionierskiej w Polsce stacji LocalDAB we Wrocławiu. Wyniki opisanych prac mogą być pomocne dla naukowców i profesjonalistów działających we wspomnianej dziedzinie.

The subject of providing high coverage of the digital multiplex is an important factor to both public and private broadcasters, especially local stations interested in the digitalization process. This work describes a geoinformatic tool, dedicated to coverage analysis of local DAB+ broadcasting stations. The analysis involved the Polish pioneer LocalDAB station in Wrocław. Results of carried out research may be of interest to scientists and professionals active in the aforementioned field.

W dobie mediów cyfrowych kluczowym elementem jest dostarczanie treści wysokiej jakości. Wśród systemów radiofonii cyfrowej do najpopularniejszych należą standardy DAB i DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting). Przy konfiguracji multipleksu ważne jest właściwe zarządzanie zasobami w ramach pojedynczego kanału radiowego. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań subiektywnych, dotyczących jakości transmisji w systemach DAB i DAB+, przeprowadzonych przy pomocy zaprojektowanego łącza radiowego.

Currently, delivering high quality content to consumers is one of the most challenging tasks. Among numerous broadcasting standards, with different pros and cons, the DAB and DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting) systems are considered as most popular. When configuring a particular multiplex, efficient resource management becomes a crucial factor. In this paper a subjective quality assessment of the DAB and DAB+ broadcasting systems is described, using a radio link designed for this test.

In the age of digital media, delivering broadcast content to customers at an acceptable level of quality is one of the most challenging tasks. The most important factor is the efficient use of available resources, including bandwidth. An appropriate way of managing the digital multiplex is essential for both the economic and technical issues. In this paper we describe transmission quality measurements in the DAB+ broadcast system. We provide a methodology for analysing parameters and factors related with the efficiency and reliability of a digital radio link. We describe a laboratory stand that can be used for transmission quality assessment on a regional and national level.
