The article presents analysis of the collision between passenger ship „Celestyal Crystal” and chemical tanker „STI Pimlico”in the Çanakkale Strait’s Traffic Separation Scheme on 27 June 2015. The detailed description of accident in the aspect of the COLREG rules and the analysis of the last chance manoeuver shows majority of the factors influencing on the safety in navigation. The role of Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) and communication with Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) in narrow passages with high traffic density were also presented.

Although marine research on anthozoans began at the end of the 1800s with some reports on the occurrence in Turkey, comprehensive knowledge about their biotic features remains limited. This study is the first detailed diversity assessment of scleractinian corals inhabiting the Turkish waters. The surveys conducted on rocky habitats between 2011 and 2014 around the Dardanelles and Marmara Sea provided the distributional data of nine corals, five of which (Caryophyllia inornata, Paracyathus pulchellus, Polycyathus muellerae, Phyllangia mouchezii, Leptopsammia pruvoti) were recorded for the first time from the above- mentioned regions. During the surveys carried out at 200 stations down to 50 m depth, a total of 1072 scuba dives were made and the ecological features of habitats, physical characteristics of coral species and an updated list of corals as a contribution to the scleractinian fauna of Turkey were provided. The abundance rate of Polycyathus muellerae and Cladocora caespitosa in Eceabat and Dardanos regions was higher than at the other stations.

This study includes new records of soft corals found in the Turkish Straits System (Dardanelles) between 2013-2014. In the above-mentioned area, 50 stations were searched by scientific divers from the intertidal zone to a depth of over 45 m and the ecological characteristics with substrate differences were also recorded. A total of 47 cnidarians were examined during the surveys. Eleven anthozoan species (Aiptasia mutabilis, Alcyonium acaule, Andresia parthenopea, Calliactis parasitica, Cereus pedunculatus, Condylactis aurantiaca, Epizoanthus couchii, Maasella edwardsi, Pteroeides spinosum, Sarcodictyon roseum, Veretillum cynomorium) belonging to 4 orders are new to the Dardanelles strait, one of which is reported from the Marmara Sea. The current data contributed to the advancement of the knowledge about anthozoan species in the Turkish Seas.

This investigation focused on weekly variations in cell density and volume of the dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans between March 2001 and January 2004 in the Dardanelles. March-June and October-December periods were excessive bloom periods. During the bloom periods the density of N. scintillans reached 2.20 × 105 cells L-1 with a volume of 1.32 × 1012 µm3 L-1. In addition to the high surface density, there was an increase in subsurface waters during the blooms. The bloom of N. scintillans, like that of diatom and other dinoflagellate blooms, was associated not only with eutrophication, but also with stable temperatures and salinities.

The structure of the benthic amphipod assemblage and its relationship with soft-bottom characteristics (particle size, organic matter, etc.) of the coastal waters at the depths of 0-5 m at the Dardanelles, including the Turkish Straits System, was studied. A SCUBA diver took benthos and sediment samples seasonally using a quadrate system of 30×30 cm as three transects from the 8 different stations between July 2008 and April 2009. A total of 3007 individuals belonging to 50 species was reported. Among these, Corophium acutum Chevreux, 1908 had the highest dominance value (Di%=22.18) and the lowest dominance value belonged to Dexamine thea Boeck, 1861 (Di%=0.03). The highest positive correlation (rs=0.57, p<0.05) was observed between the gravel content (%) and the abundance (ind. m-2). The highest sand rate (99.59%) in the sediment was found at the Eceabat site. The lowest rate was at the Kepez Harbour station with a value of 73.01%. The highest H´ value (1.53) was recorded at the Eceabat site, and the lowest H´ value (H´=0.95) was recorded at the Gallipoli sampling station.
