The paper presents the results of a detailed petrographic study of rock samples from the Dębowiec Beds, obtained using a number of different analytical methods (microscopic analysis, CL, SEM, EDS ISIS, XRD). The Bielowicko IG 1 borehole, one of many located in the south-western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin margin, was subjected to detailed analysis due to the need for geological exploration of potential CO2 storage sites. The samples represent fine-grained conglomerates and predominantly medium-grained sandstones classified as subarkose and sublithic arenites. The conglomerates are polymictic with a predominance of clasts of sedimentary origin. Carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite), authigenic quartz, clay minerals (illite, chlorite, kaolinite) and iron hydroxides have been identified as cement of these rocks. There is also pseudomatrix formedfrom the grinding of soft clasts of clay rocks. Sandstones and conglomerates were subjected to numerous diagenetic processes, such as mechanical and chemical compaction, cementation, replacement, dissolution and alteration of unstable components. The effects of dissolution and alteration are observed as secondary intragranular and intercrystalline porosity. The sediments are characterized by modest porosity (average about 10%) and very poor permeability. The pre-selected Cieszyn-Skoczów-Czechowice reservoir, within which the Bielowicko IG 1 borehole is located, was ranked as having the highest potential for CO2 storage in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin margin.
