Heavy metals in the waters of Dąbie Lake in the years 1997-2000

The aim of the studies, carried out in the years 1997-2000, was to determine the content of cadmium, lead, copper, zinc and iron in the waters of Dąbie Lake, being the internal part of the tertiary Odra estuary. The range of observed concentrations (ppm) for the analysed metals was between 0.0002 and 0.0314 for cadmium, between 0.0033 and 0.1915 for lead, 0.0053 and 0.1546 for copper, 0.0083 and 0.1922 for zinc and between 0.049 and 1.521 for iron. The concentrations observed were similar to [he concentrations noted along the current of the Odra river, and hydrochemical conditions (water pH reaction, oxygen conditions, overall hardness) could have neutralising effect on their toxicity. Despite the high water dynamics (flow-through and polimictic lake), higher concentrations of heavy metals were shown to be present in bottom layers rather than in subsurface layers, which was connected with settleable solids' sedimentation (positive correlation with seston dry matter). Statistical analysis reveals autochtonic origin of zinc, cadmium. lead and iron (negative correlations with the circulation).

Celem przeprowadzonych w latach 1997-2000 badań było określenie zawartości kadmu, ołowiu, miedzi, cynku i żelaza w wodach jeziora Dąbie, stanowiącego integralną część [[I rzędowego estuarium Odry. Zakres notowanych stężeń (ppm) dla analizowanych metali wahał się: dla kadmu od 0,0002 do 0,0314, dla ołowiu od 0,0033 do 0,1915, dla miedzi od 0,0053 do 0, 1546, dla cynku od 0,0083 do 0. 1922 i żelaza od 0,049 do 1,521. Stwierdzone stężenia były zbliżone do stężeń notowanych na znacznej długości biegu rzeki Odry, a warunki hydrochemiczne (odczyn wody, warunki tlenowe, twardość ogólna) mogły wpływać ncutrali7lijąco na ich toksyczne działanie. Pomimo dużej dynamiki wód (jezioro przepływowe, polimiktyczne) wykazano wyższe koncentracje metali ciężkich w warstwach przydennych niż powierzchniowych, związane z sedymentacją zawiesin (dodatnie korelacje z suchą masą sestonu). Analiza statystyczna wskazuje na autochtoniczne pochodzenie cynku, kadmu, ołowiu i żelaza (korelacje ujemne z przepływem).

The Dąbie Lake is the last component of the estuary complex of the Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Laguna. Genetically it belongs to the delta lakes. The lake is being very intensively flushed by waters of the Regalica River and at the same time it is transient accumulative basin of the most part on the Odra's waters. The Dąbie Lake has a well developed shore-line with a big number of smaller and bigger islands. Nowadays, the form of the lake is the result of human activity in Szczecin Harbour, which began in the middle of the XIX century. Especially the south-west part of the lake has been changed because of it. Scientific research shows that the Dąbie Lake has the very complicated hydrological conditions. One can notice two-way flows, and the vertical water levels stratification. The Dąbie Lake belongs to the shallow basins. The nearshore (up to 2 m deep) is 100-200 meters wide and it takes 20 % of lake area. More than 50 % of the area is 2-3 meters deep. The area of the lake deeper than 3 meters takes 21,7 % of all area. According to the lay-out of the bottom, the Dąbie Lake is the shallow bowl, which shores raise nearly ortogonally in the east part of the basic and less steep in the west and north part.
