Content available remote Are beetles good indicators of insect diversity in freshwater lakes?

The study verifies the usefulness of aquatic beetles as an indicator of biodiversity of a simple ecological system. Detailed analyses were carried out at the elementary level for the purpose of determining the significance of correlations between the biodiversity of Coleoptera and other groups of aquatic insects in single samples. The relation of selected taxa to selected habitats of the lake Wukśniki (north-eastern Poland) was also investigated. Moreover, the possibility of application of biodiversity surrogates, i.e. higher taxonomic units (genera and orders), in the determination of biodiversity was examined. A significant high correlation was determined between Coleoptera and the total remaining taxa (RR – Remaining Richness) in samples collected in the entire lake. The correlation has the highest value at the species level. The complementarity analysis reveals that the percentage contribution of Coleoptera in the overall biodiversity of the lake is similarly high at the species and genus level, and substantially lower at the family level. In accordance with the hypothesis, aquatic beetles can be used as indicators of the overall biodiversity of insects in the ecosystem of a mesotrophic lake. Biodiversity surrogates, i.e. higher taxonomic units (genera and families), can be applied instead of the species level.

New records of 34 aquatic beetle species from Albania are presented. Seventeen species are recorded for the first time from this country, including 3 species of Haliplidae, 6 of Dytiscidae, 6 of Hydrophilidae and 2 of Dryopidae. Coelostoma hispanicum (Küst.) is confirmed to occur in an area east of the Mediterranean Sea. An updated checklist of Albanian aquatic Coleoptera is also provided. The list counts 125 species belonging to 11 families. There are 3 species of Gyrinidae, 9 of Haliplidae, 1 of Noteridae, 44 of Dytiscidae, 4 of Helophoridae, 1 of Hydrochidae, 21 of Hydrophilidae, 33 of Hydraenidae, 5 of Elmidae, 3 of Dryopidae, and 1 of Limnichidae.

The occurrence of Osmoderma eremita (Scopoli, 1763), an endangered species restricted to hollow trees, was studied in a network or rural avenues in northern Poland. We detected1002 trees with hollows suitable for hermit beetle development (25% of all trees). Among them, 114 (11%) were occupied by O. eremita. The distribution of O. eremita was not random with respect to tree species identity. Tilia cordata and Alnus glutinosa were preferred while Acer platanoides andCarpinus betulus were avoided. The beetle preferred trees about 450 cm in circumference at 1.3 m height with a tendency towards lower occupancies of the biggest trees having circumferences above 500 m. O. eremita did not show any significant preferences accroding to hollow entrance area, exposition and road surface type. Contrary to common belief O. eremita did not prefer oaks. Our result show that preservation schemes and choices of prime areas for conservation for heremit beetles have to included stands of trees other than oak.

Analiza paleontologiczna 46 próbek z otworu wiertniczego w Koczarkach wykazała obecność różnorodnych szczątków zwierząt: mięczaków, małżoraczków, ryb i owadów. Na tej podstawie określono warunki paleoekologiczne i paleoklimatyczne w jakich powstawały osady z fauną oraz ich stratygrafię. Znalezione tu charakterystyczne gatunki mięczaków: Corbicula fluminalis i Lithoglyphus jahni oraz małżoraczka Scottia browniana pozwalają określić wiek osadów z fauną na interglacjał mazowiecki.
