Cotton Matters. A Recognition and Comparison of the Cottonopolises in Central-Eastern Europe during the Industrial Revolution

The paper identifies the cities in Central-Eastern Europe which were often called Manchesters in the past, because of their similar path of development and the concentration on cotton production in the 19th century in the period of the industrial revolution. The significance of the cotton industry is underlined in the growth of the cities. Following Eric Hobsbawm’s thesis, cotton is treated as the textile symbol of the industrial revolution. That is why the cities’ comparison includes the role of geography, institutions and technology, which were conducive for cotton production. We claim that cotton production was decisive for the real “take-off” of these cities. and at the same time it was the institutional factor that conditioned the economic development. The primary measure is population change over more than 100 years in 5 Cottonopolises: Manchester – the original one, Chemnitz, Lodz, Tampere and Ivanovo.

W artykule wskazano miasta w Europie środkowo-wschodniej, które w przeszłości były często nazywane Manchesterami ze względu na podobną ścieżkę rozwoju i koncentrację na produkcji bawełny (Chemnitz, Iwanowo, Łódź, Tampere). Idąc za tezami Erica Hobsbawma bawełna traktowana jest jako tekstylny symbol rewolucji przemysłowej. Zaproponowana analiza porównawcza obejmuje wpływ czynników geograficznych, instytucjonalnych i technologicznych, które sprzyjały produkcji bawełny. W ocenie autorów produkcja bawełny była decydująca dla nadania impetu rozwojowi gospodarczemu miast będących przedmiotem analizy.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawione zostały systemy kolejowo - tramwajowe powstałe w dwóch niemieckich miastach - Chemnitz i Kassel. Dla każdego miasta podano charakterystykę linii, po których poruszają się tramwaje dwusystemowe, między innymi parametry techniczne linii, długości tras, a także lokalizację i infrastrukturę przystankową. Opisano również organizację ruchu tramwajów dwusystemowych w warunkach kolejowych. Następnie scharakteryzowano pojazdy i podano ich podstawowe parametry. Artykuł zawiera także krótki opis uwarunkowań formalno - prawnych dla takich systemów. Opisano również plany rozbudowy systemów kolejowo - tramwajowych w tych miastach.

The rail-tram systems operating in two German towns - Chemnitz and Kassel have been presented in the paper. For each of the towns the characteristics of the lines, where the dual-capable trams run, among other the technical parameters of the lines, lines length, the location and the steps infrastructure have been given. The dual-capable trams traffic organization in railway conditions has been characterized. Afterwards the characteristics of the tram cars and their main parameters have been given. The short description of formal and legal conditions for such systems has been included. The plans for rail-tram systems development in both towns have been described.
