The effectiveness of design of experiments (DOE) [2, 5] as a statistical tool for analyzing and optimizing process and product performance has been well recognized in many industries. More recently, encouraged by the spreading implementation of Six Sigma [1] programs, DOE has become a "must have" in any quality improvement initiative, with application extending beyond physical systems to commercial operations. One way to improve quality is to reduce the impact of variation. Six Sigma approach emphasized that quality is improved by minimizing the effect of variables that are difficult or impossible to control. Using the design of experiments technique, settings of variables that are controllable are sought that are insensitive to the effects of the noise factors. In this paper a summary of methods for using DOE in the optimization of the cooper cast rotors high pressure die casting (HPDC) manufacturing process is presented.
