W artykule omówiono zagadnienie zwiększenia szczegółowości wydzieleń zawartych w bazach danych opracowanych w ramach programu CORINE Land Cover poprzez zastosowanie mniejszego pola jednostki kartowania i wprowadzenie czwartego poziomu wydzieleń. Porównano zawartość baz danych CORINE Land Cover z nową, szczegółową bazą opracowaną dla powiatu radziejowskiego przy wykorzystaniu tego samego źródła informacji, czyli zdjęć wykonanych przez satelitę Landsat.

The databases prepared within the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) program do not meet the requirements of most national users because of their low spatial resolution. The authors of the article decided to increase this resolution from 25 ha to 2 ha. As the source of information they used the same satellite images which were the basis of CLC database. For an example they chose the area of agricultural Radziejów district (powiat) in central Poland. In CLC-90 base which represents land cover in this region there are 187 polygons with the average size of 324.2 ha representing 13 forms of terrain cover. After having changed the spatial resolution to 2 ha the number of distinguished terrain forms rose to 20. The number of polygons increase to 967 while their average area decreased to 63 ha. In order to make the database more detailed the fourth level of legend was also introduced. It made it possible to increase the number of distinguished forms of terrain cover to 34. A comparison of the data bases prepared for the year 1990 (CLC-90) at the turn of the centuries showed in Radziejów district some minor changes in land cover, which took place on the area of about 147 ha and were represented by only two polygons. At the same time the comparison of detailed data bases showed that those changes covered the area of over 1500 ha and were represented with 297 polygons.

Two databases were elaborated by the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography as results of CORINE Land Cover 90 and CORINE Land Cover 2000 projects. They contain data about land cover in Poland in 1990 and 2000. The comparison of these two databases revealed insignificant differences in land cover in the last decade of 20th century. Taking into account development of Polish economy, bigger changes in land use/land cover could be expected. To determine whether land use in Poland is stable or changeable, but over much longer period of time, the CORINE Land Cover 2000 database was compared with the General Map of Land Use in Poland at the scale 1:1 000 000 elaborated by F. Uhorczak. Topographic maps at the scale 1:100 000 elaborated before the World War II were the source materiale for compiling the General Map of Land Use in Poland at the scale 1:1000000. This map was converted to digital form to compare its content with the CORINE Land Cover 2000 database generalized to 8 land use/cover forms. There is a time lag of about seventy years between elaboration of topographic maps and the CORINE Land Cover 2000 database and for that reason bigger land use/ cover change could be observed. Comparison of the General Map of Land Use in Poland at the scale 1:1000000 with generalised CORINE Land Cover 2000 database revealed considerable changes in land use/land cover over the period of seventy years. They comprised above 9% of the total area of the country. The greatest changes occurred in arable areas, meadows and pastures. These land use/cover forms were converted into forests, settlements and industrial areas.
