The criteria and a methodology were developed for evaluating the suitability of locations for the construction of underground thermal energy storage using closed systems: BTES (Borehole Thermal Energy Storage), PTES/TTES (Pit/Tank Thermal Energy Storage), and EF (Energy Foundations). Based on this methodology and the established criteria, 25 locations in Poland were assessed for their potential to store excess heat in the rock mass. A key part of the task involved analysing Poland's existing legal and regulatory framework concerning the implementation of these technologies, and developing recommendations to optimise formal and legal conditions. The results have been made available through the PGI-NRI online platforms.
