Connections between the Dry Bulk Freight Index and the Cyclical Economic Activity of the G7 Countries

The article analyses the connections between the dry bulk freight market and the economic activity of certain countries. The objective was to confirm the existence of a similar cyclical nature for the Baltic Dry Index and main indicators of the business cycle of the G7 countries. The applied macroeconomic variables were: the real GDP and the industrial production index. In examination a spectral analysis was used. The discovered identical periodicities were analyzed in terms of time relations. It was demonstrated, that the cyclical part of the BDI (periodicity of 13.1 and 15.3 quarters) either leads or is coincident with the indicators of the business cycle. The global financial crisis in 2008-2009 showed that the behaviour of freight indices was similar to stock exchange indices and macroeconomic variables in advanced economies. It is worth to observe shipping market because higher values of freight indices could anticipate increasing demand for sea trade and economic growth.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki ba-^ dań rynku transportu morskiego w warunkach recesji gospodarczej w latach 2008-2009. Pierwszym symptomem recesji był spadek indeksu frachtowego BDI o 80% między majem a końcem 2008 roku w wyniku gwałtownego zmniejszenia podaży ładunków masowych. Również w transporcie kontenerów, który uzależniony jest od transportu dóbr konsumpcyjnych, nastąpiło załamanie rynku w wyniku zmniejszenia wydatków na konsumpcję. W efekcie o około 10% spadły przewozy towarów w kontenerach i przewiduje się, że ta tendencja utrzyma się w 2010 roku. Ta sytuacia spowodowała, że w przemyśle budowy statków zmniejszono zamówienia lub uprzesunięto terminy odbioru łącznie około 50% zamówionych statków.

Author presents in the article research results of the maritime transport market in economy recession conditions 2008-2009. The Baltic Dry lndex (BDI) has tumbled 80% percent in the end of 2008 from a record in May of 2009 as the globai recession saps demand for shipments of bulk commodities. The container industry, which transports manufactured goods by sea, is in crisis situation as factured goods by sea, is in cnsis situation as consumers in world economies rein in spending. At the same time, the container shipping segment was hardest hit and cargo volumes in containers may drop morę than ]0% in 2009 and show no growth in 2010. About 50% ship orders being cancelled or postponed in shipping industry.
