Research and Development Centre of Electrical Machines (BOBRME) KOMEL areas of interest include design, construction, lab and on-site tests and diagnostics of different kinds of electrical machines. At present we mostly deal with medium and large power induction machines and machines excited with permanent magnets. Komel occupies the leading position among Polish companies developing and investigating these machines. Therefore, this paper’s subject matter is limited to these two machine types. With respect to induction machines, the following topics have been covered: - motors with frequent start-ups, - motors with allowable long start-up time, - motors with decreased power losses (energy-saving motors), including those fulfilling NEMA MGI standards demands, - 6-phase motor adapted to inverter supply. Examples of different constructions have been presented, such as motors driving deep-well pumps, electric traction motors, sea motors, mine motors, high-speed motors, slip-ring motors with hollow shaft used for pipe cementing. With respect to electrical machines excited with permanent magnets, the following topics have been covered: - motors used for driving electric vehicles such as SAM, ELIPSA, QUAD, mine locomotive, motor hangglider, - synchronous generators for wind and hydro power stations.

Magnetising of NdFeB permanent magnets is performed in electromagnetic circuit shown in Fig.1. Charged condenser battery acts as a source of pulse magnetizing current - Fig.2. Exciter's current, which flows after the charged condenser's battery is switched on reaches its maximum value, along hyperbolic sine (Fig.4a) or cosine curve (Fig.4b). Current change is aperiodical, with exciter's electromagnetic time constant. Laboratory of Komel Centre uses condenser battery of maximum energy equal to 9600 J. The battery consists of four sections (Fig.5), which can be connected: in parallel (120 mF, 400 V), in mixed connection (30 mF, 800V) or in serial connection (7,5 mF, 1600 V).

The paper presents the new laboratory of Electrical Machines of Komel Centre Katowice, Poland. The new, just built Laboratory is "energy efficient" - supply system (rotating machines, as well as power electronic converters) are controlled by the computer system. What's more the energy during long test of the motors via the converter is "pushed" back to the supply network. AC machines up to 250 kW, DC machines up to 100 kW as well as hand tools, special DC motors for aviation can be tested in the laboratory.
