Sampled time flow control algorithm for fast connection oriented communication networks

In this paper the problem of flow control in fast communication networks is considered. A new sampled time algorithm governing the source behaviour is proposed. The algorithm combines Smith principle with the conventional dead-bit controller. It guarantees full link utilisation and no cell lossin the controled virtual circuit. Consequently, the need of cell retransmission is eliminated. Furthermore, transmission rates generated by the algorithm can always be limited to an arbitrary level greater than the maximum available bandwidth of the controlled connection. A simulation example confirms favourable performance of the proposed controller.

W artykule przedstawiono wymagania, jakie powinny spełniać nowoczesne sieci lokalne bazujące na technologii ATM, założenia architektury takich LAN oraz problemy integracji sieci tego typu z dotychczas stosowanymi rozwiązaniami w sieciach lokalnych. Zamieszczono także opis praktycznych rozwiązań ATM LAN i stan standaryzacji protokołów ATM dla sieci lokalnych. Zawarty jest także opis instalacji laboratoryjnej sieci ATM w IITiS PAN oraz plany badań, które będą przeprowadzone z wykorzystaniem tej instalacji.

In this article authors introduce requirements for modern local area networks based on ATM technology, assumptions of architecture of the ATM LAN and problems with internetworking between the ATM LAN and the legacy LAN. Practical solutions of the ATM LAN, the ATM standards for the local area netrworks, the installation of laboratory ATM network and the plans of researches with described installation were presented.
