Climate change has become a pitfall towards economic growth, sustainable development, and ecological balance, which is not different in Bangladesh. This study investigates the relationship between the ecological footprint and the globalisation of Bangladesh in 1980-2021. The auto-regressive distributed lag model (ARDL) bound test confirms the long-run relationship among carbon footprint, ecological footprint, globalisation, and other control variables. Long-run and short elasticity confirm that globalisation, population density, energy consumption, and political and economic globalisation stimulate ecological footprint. On the other hand, economic growth is a culprit of ecological footprint. It reflects alternative signs with an ecological footprint. On carbon footprint, results are similar to ecological footprint except for energy consumption. As ecological footprint increases, people consume more energy in the short run while less energy in the long run. Laws enforced in the last or previous decades regarding environmental issues need more strictness and acceptability to utilise energy through advanced technology and robust inflows from the foreign sector.

Content available remote Assessing the cost of friction between NATO Allies
EN
This paper proposes a method for assessing the cost of friction between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) allies and highlights internal threats. This is applied to the Greek–Turkish conflict within the NATO context and concerns the functioning of defence expenditure in Greece, modified in such a way as to focus on the causes of friction between these allies. The analysis concentrates mainly on the issue of internal threats to the long-run equilibrium of NATO. The ARDL methodology used modifies the typical error correction model by introducing a mechanism that accelerates the process that leads back to the long-run equilibrium. Along with assessing the cost to an ally in relation to an internal threat, the method proposed allows the time required for the long-run equilibrium of NATO to be restored. The paper concludes that dynamic incidents of friction between allies expressed as an internal threat disturb NATO’s static equilibrium, destabilise an individual ally’s defence policy and contribute to cost being incurred.

This article examines the short- and long-run effects of water price, system input, income, temperature on domestic water demand for Amman area over the period of 1980–2012. An empirical, dynamic autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model for water demand is developed on a yearly basis. This approach is capable of testing and analysing the dynamic relationship with time series data using a single equation regressions. Results show the ability of the model to predicting future trends (short- and long-run association). The main results indicate that water demand in limited water environment is partially captured in the long-run by the amount of water reaching the customer. The short- and long-run elasticities of water price (–0.061, –0.028) and high temperature (0.023, 0.054) indicate inelastic behaviour on water demand both in short- and long-run, while the lagged water price has a significant effect on demand. Income represented by gross domestic product (GDP) slightly affects water consumption in the long-run and insignificantly in the short-run (0.24, 0.24). Water consumption is strongly linked to consumption habits measured by lagged billed amount 0.35, and is strongly linked to amount of supplied water both in short- and long-run (0.47, 0.53). These results suggest that water needs should be satisfied first to allow controlling water demand through a good pricing system. Moreover, the association identified between demand and water system input, and the lesser elasticities of water price and other explanatory variables confirm the condition of water deficit in Amman area and Jordan. The results could be rolled out to similar cities suffering scarce water resources with arid and semi-arid weather conditions.

The current study explores the impact of energy consumption, total population, gross domestic product on carbon emissions by utilizing time series data of 1971-2013 for China. Earlier studies concentrated on testing the present form of an environmental Kuznets curve not taking total population in a model. Specifically, this study focuses on analyzing the long run existence of environmental Kuznets curve. The methodology of auto regressive distributed lag model is utilized. The quadratic linkage between national income and emissions of carbon have been detected, confirming the presence of long run linkage between quadratic national income and emissions of carbon. Granger causality test divulge one-way causality between gross domestic product and carbon emissions. The empirical findings also reveal that the energy use and national income are important factors of carbon emanations in the long run. Total population has an insignificant positive influence on emissions of carbon. It is suggested that government should focus to extract that substitute sources of energy which is more environmental friendly.

The relationship between inflation and financial development remains an important issue in the empirical and theoretical literature, but has yet to receive significant research attention. This paper examines this issue for South Africa by applying the bounds testing (ARDL) approach to cointegration using a monthly series for the period from 2007 to 2016. The bounds tests suggest that the variables are bound together in the long run when credit allocated to the private sector is the dependent variable. The associated equilibrium correction is also significant, confirming the existence of a long-run relationship. The results indicate significant Granger and ARDL causality from inflation to the credit allocated to private sector as a measure of financial development. The empirical finding implies moderate rise in price level would motivate financial development in South Africa. Hence, the study concludes that management of financial system must be conducted in a manner that would motivate a moderate increase in price levels.
