The study contains a review of seldom encountered quality management methods and tools which are applied in the automotive industry to solve problems related to nonconforming products. Three tools have been discussed: 5WHY, 7 Diamonds and Drill Deep and Wide. The tools differ from each other in terms of their complexity and the scope of application: from the simplest problems related to product quality to complex problems occurring in the production process. The scope of their application may refer to one product, the whole production process as well as to all processes in the corporation.

W opracowaniu przedstawiono przegląd rzadko spotykanych narzędzi i metod zarządzania jakością stosowanych w przemyśle motoryzacyjnym do rozwiązywania problemów z niezgodnymi wyrobami. Omówiono trzy narzędzia: 5WHY, 7 Diamentów oraz Wierć Głęboko i Szeroko. Narzędzia różnią się od siebie złożonością oraz zakresem stosowania: od najprostszych problemów z jakością wyrobów, do skomplikowanych problemów występujących w procesie pro-dukcyjnym. Zakres ich stosowania może odnosić się do jednego wyrobu, całego procesu produkcyj-nego, ale również do wszystkich procesów w całej korporacji.

The automotive industry is one of the most important branches of the global industry. For this purpose, products are produced by an extensive network of suppliers. They supply components directly to the (OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer) or to the secondary market of parts. In recent years, the economic situation in these companies has dramatically deteriorated and it is associated with a decrease in new car sales. These companies are constantly making decisions to improve their production processes using various quality tools. These actions may help to increase their competitive advantage and thereby improve their financial situation. The surveyed company produces drive half-shafts for different types of cars. The studies were carried out to analyse the causes of non-compliance - falling band from the housing on the drive shaft. In order to identify and verify the causes for non-compliance and undertake corrective action following methods were used: Ishikawa diagram, 5WHY and brainstorming.

The article presents the results of research into the time of work of maintenance department employees in a selected production plant. The measurements have been taken for three selected employees during 9 working days. Major activities performed by the employees have been identified and classified in three basic groups: the effective time devoted to daily duties connected with technical means maintenance, the auxiliary time which involves preparatory and administrative works as well as the ineffective time during which the employees undertook activities not related to the performed work. Among the ineffective and auxiliary activities the longest lasting ones have been specified. By means of the 5Why Method the causes responsible for the occurrence of major ineffective and auxiliary activities have been identified. As a result of the conducted analysis, corrective measures aimed at shortening the time of these activities have been identified, which should contribute to the improvement of maintenance department employees’ work effectiveness.
