Politechnika Gdańska rozpoczęła swoją działalność 6 października 1904 r., jako Königliche Techniche Hochschule zu Danzig. Zadaniem uczelni było szerzenie wiedzy technicznej na terenie Prus Zachodnich oraz Pomorza. Od początku działalności kadrę uczelni tworzyło wielu wybitnych uczonych. Na sześciu wydziałach studia rozpoczęło blisko 200 studentów. W 1921 r. została oddana w jurysdykcję Senatu Wolnego Miasta Gdańska. 5 kwietnia 1945 r. grupa operacyjna Ministerstwa Oświaty rozpoczęła odbudowę oraz uruchomienie uczelni. 24 maja 1945 r. Dekretem Rady Ministrów politechnika została przekształcona w polską państwową szkołę akademicką. W pierwszym roku po wojnie studia podjęło 1647 studentów. Kadrę dydaktyczną stanowili pracownicy naukowi z Politechniki Lwowskiej i Warszawskiej oraz Uniwersytetu Wileńskiego, w tym wielu wybitnych profesorów oraz liczni polscy absolwenci przedwojennej politechniki.

Gdansk University of Technology - the oldest technical university in Pomerania region - its foundation is inscribed in a centuries–old tradition of scientific life in Gdansk. On 6th October 1904, the university began its activity as Königliche Technische Hochschule zu Danzig. The main task of the university was to spread technical knowledge in the area of West Prussia and Pomerania. Since the very beginning nearly 200 students began to study at six faculties taught by university staff consisted of many distinguished scientists. In 1921 the technical university was subjected to the jurisdiction of the Senate of the Free City of Danzig. In the mid – twenties Polish students amounted to more than 30% of all students. Among them were many graduates who became later professors and famous scientists at Polish HEI’s after the Second World War. On 24th May 1945 the technical university was legally transformed into a Polish state academic university by Decree of the Council of Ministers. But already since 5th April, the Ministry of Education operational group started reconstructions of the buildings and launched the university activity. In the first year after the Second World War 1647 students began to study at six university faculties. University academic staff consisted mainly of scientists from the prominent universities and technical universities of Lviv, Vilnius and Warsaw. Among them were many outstanding professors and numerous Polish graduates of Gdansk University of Technology who completed their studies and received a degree before the Second World War.
