Analytical approach to product reliability estimation based on life test data for an automotive clutch system

The study of reliability is an important part of engineering design process which forms the basis of analysis and judgment on future performance of the product. Since the future couldn't be predicted with an absolute certainty, the nature of reliability would lead us to probability theory and uncertainty modeling. The quantitative calculation of this parameter for mechanical systems within different steps of production requires an analytical and systematic approach which has been focused in this paper. The proposed approach has been applied for calculating reliability of a clutch system as a case study. The system reliability in this work is determined based on the block diagram method as a function of individual component reliabilities which are calculated by statistical analysis of life test results. Using Weibull model, reliability of a typical clutch system has been formulated based on durability bench test and results has been interpreted to estimate field reliability.

Praca dotyczy opisu światowych tendencji rozwojowych nauki o materiałach i inżynierii materiałowej w pierwszych dziesięcioleciach XXI wieku. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na interdyscyplinarny charakter omawianej dyscypliny nauki oraz przedstawiono zakres jej zainteresowań. Podstawowym celem nauki o materiałach i inżynierii materiałowej jest dobór materiałów zapewniających wymagane funkcje i własności użytkowe wytwarzanych z nich produktów. Wyznaczono zadania tej dyscypliny nauki w priorytetowych sferach rozwoju światowego, do których zaliczono poprawę warunków życia, system ochrony zdrowia, komunikację i przesył informacji, rozwój dobór konsumpcyjnych oraz transport. Wśród kierunków działań nauki o materiałach i inżynierii materiałowej, zapewniających osiągnięcie celów strategicznych rozwoju społeczeństw wymieniono projektowanie materiałowe, komputerową naukę o materiałach, rozwinięte techniki analityczne, wytwarzanie i przetwórstwo, nanomateriały oraz materiały inteligentne i biomimetyczne. W podsumowaniu wskazano na humanistyczną misję stojącą przed środowiskiem inżynierskim i istotną rolę, jaką w tym odgrywa inżynieria materiałowa oraz na bezwzględną potrzebę inwestowania w naukę o materiałach, dla osiągania nowoczesnego postępu technologicznego i zapewnienia dobrobytu społeczeństw w przyszłości.

The work concerns the description of the world developmental trends in materials science and egineering in the first decades of the 21th century. The special attention has been paid to the interdisciplinary character of the discussed field of science and the range of its interests has been presented. The fundamental aim of materials science and engineering is materials selection ensuring required functions and appplication properties of products which are manufactured out of them. The tasks of that field of science in priority spheres of the world development, which include the improvement of life conditions, the system of health protection, communication and information transmission, the development of consumptional goods and transport, have been determined. Among directions of activities of materials science and engineering ensuring the achievements of strategic aims of society developments, materials design, computational materials science, advanced analytical methods, manufacturing and processing, nano- , smart and biomimetic materials. In the conclusion a humanistic mission standing at the engineering circle and the crucial role which is played there by materials science and a strict need of investing in materials science to achieve modern technological development and to ensure prosperity of societies in future have been pointed out.
