Zadaniem oświetlenia reﬂektorowego pojazdów jest zapewnienie widoczności obiektów w warunkach braku oświetlenia naturalnego. Jest ono w swojej naturze niedoskonałe. Oświetlone obiekty są jasne na ciemnym tle, a więc w sposób odmienny (negatywowy) niż podczas percepcji dziennej. Ponadto natężenie oświetlenia maleje z kwadratem odległości od pojazdu (reﬂektora), co w praktyce zdecydowanie ogranicza zasięg tego oświetlenia. Wzrok ludzki natomiast ulega złudzeniu dobrej widoczności w sytuacji, gdy blisko pojazdu pada dużo światła. Subiektywna, wzrokowa ocena oświetlenia dokonywana przez kierowców jest więc najczęściej nieprawidłowa.

For many years, the only activity conducted while using car headlights has been the visual adjusting of the base of the cut-off line. On the other hand, many advanced headlight designs exist which facilitate excellent performance, including gas discharge devices or LED light sources. In the last few years, there have been numerous efforts made in order to come up with objective laboratory-quality assessment methods. The works of the CIE TC4-45 technical committee can serve as an example. But in practice, a signiﬁcant number of vehicles are equipped with low quality headlights installed after repairs. What’s more, many plastic casings are scratched and tarnished and the inside of the headlight is frequently dust-covered. These problems are not noted during simple periodical technical inspections. At present, a headlight analyser has been developed at the Motor Transport Institute. It utilises a CCD camera and computer-imaging analysis and allow for the testing of more detailed characteristics of the beam pattern in garage conditions in a more objective way. A set of conditions has been introduced based on the device measurements of the large numbers of vehicles in use. It turned out that a signiﬁcant percentage of the headlights in use does not meet minimum requirements. The test results and the main factors responsible for the difference between type approval and use are described in the dissertation.

Często staramy się oszczędzać energię elektryczną, drastycznie ograniczając oświetlenie w naszym otoczeniu. Robimy tak, nie myśląc o tym, że do właściwego funkcjonowania po zmroku jest nam niezbędna odpowiednia ilość światła. Dobrze wiemy, iż zbyt mała wartość natężenia oświetlenia może powodować zmęczenie i złe samopoczucie, ale czasami o tym zapominamy.
