Obecnie niemal wszystkie ekosystemy na ziemi są bezpośrednio lub pośrednio poddane presji człowieka. Większość gatunków funkcjonuje w środowiskach podlegających silnej antropopresji, a tylko nieliczny odsetek występuje na obszarach mało zmienionych i chronionych. Z tego względu obszary zdominowane przez człowieka mają również duże znaczenie dla zachowania różnorodności biologicznej.

Bees are exceptional among insects as their total dependence on flower-derived food makes them extremely important players in the pollination of plants. There are more than 470 species of bees in Poland. The data from Poznan, Bydgoszcz and Łódź as well as from Berlin, Rome, and many cities in USA all show that cities provide relatively good living conditions for a large number of bee species and offer more opportunities for conservation than was previously thought. The high diversity of bees in cities is related to a large number of micro-environments within their boundaries. They allow for the colonization by species with different habitat requirements. This spatial heterogeneity can support even greater species richness than surrounding natural areas.
