Postępowi cywilizacyjnemu towarzyszy nieustanny wzrost liczby artefaktów, które są produktami wiedzy i techniki. W miarę postępu cywilizacyjnego rośnie liczba artefaktów oraz ich rola, znaczenie i wpływ na nasze życie i na możliwość przeżycia. Z jednej strony, artefakty umożliwiają nam przeżycie w trudnych sytuacjach, ale z drugiej strony stanowią poważne zagrożenia dla życia każdego człowieka oraz dla przetrwania gatunku ludzkiego. Jedna grupa zagrożeń jest związana z tym, że postęp techniki czyni z ludzi kaleki, czyli kogoś, kto musi posługiwać się różnego rodzaju artefaktami, czyli protezami, by móc w miarę normalnie istnieć i funkcjonować. Mimowolnie uzależniliśmy się pod względem egzystencjalnym i funkcjonalnym od tego, co sztuczne i staliśmy się nie tylko niewolnikami, lecz także zakładnikami artefaktów. Druga grupa zagrożeń jest związana z chęcią i koniecznością dorównywania im pod każdym względem i do naśladowania ich. Negatywna rola artefaktów zaznacza się szczególnie w sferze kultury duchowej. Chodzi tu o sztuczne języki, zachowania, postawy, relacje interpersonalne i sztuczną (wirtualną) rzeczywistość. Okazuje się ponadto, że doskonalenie się ludzi za pomocą protez idzie w parze z narastającą degradacją biologiczną człowieka.

The progress of civilization is accompanied by a continuous increase of the number of artifacts that are the product of knowledge and technology. Alongside with the civilization development, their meaning and role as well as impact on our life and our survival strengthen. While on one hand artifacts allow us to survive extreme situations, on the other they pose a serious risk for human life and for the existence of human race. One type of risks is related to the fact that technology advancements make people disabled i.e. disabled in a sense that they are addicted to using various types of artifacts - prostheses in order to normally exist and function. Unintentionally we have become dependent in functioning and existence on what is artificial, turning out to be not only slaves but elements of the artifacts. The other group of risks is related to the wish and need to equal with and imitate artifacts. Their negative role is especially visible in the area of spiritual culture in terms of artificial languages, behaviors, poses, interpersonal relationships and virtual reality. The mastering of humans by means of prostheses apparently goes in line with an increasing biological degradation of man.
