W artykule autor opisuje początki i stan współczesny rozwoju tankowania statków powietrznych środkami napędowymi w powietrzu. Przedstawia on pierwsze próby i wynikłe z nich problemy, a także osiągnięcia które miały miejsce w trakcie długotrwałego procesu rozwoju. Szybki rozwój współczesnego lotnictwa i wykorzystanie go w wielu dziedzinach spowodował, że temat dotyczący uzupełniania paliwem różnych typów statków powietrznych (załogowych i bezzałogowych) jest obecnie aktualny i godny przedstawienia.

In the above paper both the origins and the contemporary state of the development of refueling in the air are described. Apart from presenting the first attempts of air refueling along with the problem resulting from them the article also describes the achievements which have taken place during the long process of the air refueling development. Fast progress observed in the contemporary aviation and its usefulness in many areas caused that the topic of air refueling of different types of aircraft, both manned and unmanned has become valid and worthy of presentation.

Internal combustion engines still constitute the most common propulsion means used for transportation purposes including marine transportation. Its further development is determined by increasingly stringent criteria concerning emission of toxic exhaust gases and by world-wide fuel policy enforcing more and more economical use of fuel.

Silniki spalinowe wciąż stanowią najpopularniejszy środek napędowy wykorzystywany w transporcie, w tym w transporcie morskim. Jego dalszy rozwój uwarunkowany jest wzrastającymi wymaganiami dotyczącymi emisji toksycznych gazów oraz globalną polityką wymuszającą coraz bardziej ekonomiczne zużywanie paliwa.
