Laboratory investigations were carried out with real fly ash (coming from the heat and power generating plant of Kielce), which was deposited on a wet landfill. Erosion processes induced by atmospheric precipitation destroyed the granular structure of the deposited material, thus increasing its proneness to leaching. The investigations included the following steps: exposure of the fly ash to freezing temperatures, exposure to UV radiation, and exposure to both freezing temperatures and UV radiation at the same time. Water extracts from the fly ash were analyzed for the variability of pH, conductivity and alkalinity with time. Consideration was also given to the levels of chloride and sulphate leaching. The strongest influence of the climate factors and time on the chemical stability of the fly ash was observed in the eluates from the samples which had been exposed to 10-20 cycles. A better understanding of the phenomena involved can be of considerable help when interpreting the data obtained from the monitoring of fly-ash landfills.
