During construction of 7-span overpass as a part of an expressway the pedestals supporting fixed type 3,0 MN pot bearings have been seriously deteriorated. The adopted construction technology was based on erection of prestressed structure span by span using stationary scaffolding. When the last span concreting and prestressing was finished the air temperature dropped suddenly more than 18°C below zero. As the fixed bearings were anchored to the first support on abutment they have been subjected extremely high horizontal load induced by tendency to shortening of whole bridge structure. Detailed examination of this case and numerical verification showed that this induced horizontal force has overcome about 18 times the force on which the fixed bearings were designed. Not allowance for longitudinal movements on all supports during erection of bridge structure was the fundamental fault at this case. Bridge bearings should be always linked with the superstructure when its deck is finished.
