Connections of power grid components (e.g. lines, transformers, compensatory reactors, condenser batteries) lead to transient states in the elements switched on and off. These, in turn, may result in power outages and electrical and thermal stresses in network components, which have a negative impact on their lifetime. However, it is possible to eliminate or limit the transient states during connections owing to the so-called synchronized connection. It enables to control the connection process so that the power flow starts with a certain, most beneficial voltage phase angle and, in case of disconnection, the power flow stops with zero voltage phase angle. The technical and economical advantages of the synchronized connections allow for applying them world-wide in a number of power systems.
