Currently, the dynamic development of information technology contributes to the increasingly widespread application of Virtual Reality (VR) as modern and effective methods and training tools used in the process of self-education and/or training related to understanding the essence of the principles of operation and mastering the tasks of operating even complex systems or technical processes through simulating their actions. A significant argument for the use of virtual reality simulators in training uniformed services is the favorable cost-effect ratio and considerations of trainee safety. However, the use of VR simulators may be accompanied by the possibility of side effects or intensified symptoms of the so-called cybersickness. Bearing this in mind, the purpose of this article is to present the results of preliminary studies of adverse factors occurring during training using a VR simulator. The theoretical foundation for empirical research was provided by the results of a conducted review and analysis of literary content. Among the empirical methods, studies were conducted using a simulator sickness questionnaire and a research trial according to the parallel triangulation strategy scheme, involving the simultaneous use of quantitative and qualitative methods. The results obtained in this way can provide a valuable source of information about factors increasing the risk of adverse symptoms of cybersickness and ways of their mitigation, and can serve for further work on their development and application of VR simulators.

The article presents the results of research on the application of a physical exercise programme to improve the underwater orientation of military divers. The research was carried out on a group of 120 soldiers, some of whom (the study group) underwent additional training for 3 months. During the underwater straight-line swimming test in poor visibility conditions, the test group achieved statistically significantly better results than the control group. The test consisted in measuring the angle of deviation of the diver's route from the given straight line.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań nad zastosowaniem programu ćwiczeń fizycznych dla poprawy orientacji podwodnej nurkow wojskowych. Badania przeprowadzono na grupie 120 żołnierzy z ktorych część (grupa badana) poddana była dodatkowemu treningowi przez okres 3 miesięcy. Podczas sprawdzianu w pływaniu pod wodą po linii prostej w złych warunkach widoczności grupa badana osiągnęła wyniki statystycznie znamiennie lepsze od grupy kontrolnej. Badanie polegało na pomiarze kąta odchylenia trasy jaką płynął nurek od zadanej linii prostej.

Artykuł stanowi ostatnią części cyklu tekstów opublikowanych w „Wiadomościach Górniczych”. Przedstawiono w nim wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w komorze ćwiczeń na terenie OSRG w Bytomiu podczas wykonywania ćwiczeń na „drabinie bez końca”. Opisano też spostrzeżenia i podsumowanie odnoszące się do wszystkich urządzeń, na których były wykonywane ćwiczenia.

The article presents results of research carried out on a group of mine rescuers. The results are tabulated according to age groups and the order of exercising on an "endless ladder". The analysis of the results took into account the initial value, the final value and the differences in heart rate during measurements. In the case of rescuers from the age group up to 30 years, the minimum difference in heart rate after exercising on the "endless ladder" was 10 beats per minute and the maximum was 80 beats per minute. However, in the case of rescuers from the age group 31-40 years, one rescuer showed a decrease in the heart rate from 120 to 110 beats per minute. The rescuer performed the exercise on the "endless ladder" as the third exercise. The maximum difference in this age group was 80 beats per minute. In turn, in most cases, rescuers over 40 years old achieved a significant increase in the final value. The test results confirm that the suggested order of exercises on five devices (hammer, ergometer, endless ladder, stationary bike and treadmill – Fig. 2) is fully justified and there is no need to change it.

The aim of this study was to identify the determinants of peak power achieved during vertical jumps in order to clarify relationship between the height of jump and the ability to exert maximum power. Methods: One hundred young (16.8±1.8 years) sportsmen participated in the study (body height 1.861 ± 0.109 m, body weight 80.3 ± 9.2 kg). Each participant performed three jump tests: countermovement jump (CMJ), akimbo countermovement jump (ACMJ), and spike jump (SPJ). A force plate was used to measure ground reaction force and to determine peak power output. The following explanatory variables were included in the model: jump height, body mass, and the lowering of the centre of mass before launch (countermovement depth). A model was created using multiple regression analysis and allometric scaling. Results: The model was used to calculate the expected power value for each participant, which correlated strongly with real values. The value of the coefficient of determination R2 equalled 0.89, 0.90 and 0.98, respectively, for the CMJ, ACMJ, and SPJ jumps. The countermovement depth proved to be a variable strongly affecting the maximum power of jump. If the countermovement depth remains constant, the relative peak power is a simple function of jump height. Conclusions: The results suggest that the jump height of an individual is an exact indicator of their ability to produce maximum power. The presented model has a potential to be utilized under field condition for estimating the maximum power output of vertical jumps.

Purpose: One of the new products which can be used to increase physical activity and energy expenditure is the Torqway vehicle, powered by the upper limbs. The aim of this study was to (1) assess the usefulness and repeatability of the Torqway vehicle for physical exercise, (2) compare energy expenditure and physiological responses during walking on a treadmill and during physical effort while moving on the Torqway at a constant speed. Methods: The participants (11 men, aged 20.2 ± 1.3) performed the incremental test and submaximal exercises (walking on the treadmill and moving on the Torqway vehicle at the same speed). Results: Energy expenditure during the exercise on the Torqway was significantly higher (p = 0.001) than during the walking performed at the same speed. The intensity of the exercise performed on the Torqway expressed as %VO2max and %HRmax was significantly ( p < 0.001) higher than during walking (respectively: 35.0 ± 6.0 vs. 29.4 ± 7.4 %VO2max and 65.1 ± 7.3 vs. 47.2 ± 7.4 %HRmax). Conclusions: Exercise on the Torqway vehicle allows for the intensification of the exercise at a low movement speed, comparable to walking. Moving on the Torqway vehicle could be an effective alternative activity for physical fitness and exercise rehabilitation programs.

Street workout to nowoczesna nazwa kalisteniki, a więc formy aktywności fizycznej, bazującej na ćwiczeniach wykorzystujących masę własnego ciała. Chodzi np. o pompki, przysiady, brzuszki czy podciągnięcia. Do tych czynności nie jest potrzebny drogi i specjalistyczny sprzęt.

W niniejszym artykule opisano problem dolegliwości mięśniowo-szkieletowych związanych z wykonywaną pracą oraz przedstawiono zalecenia dotyczące profilaktyki tych dolegliwości w zakresie aktywności fizycznej. Zaprezentowano również programy promujące aktywność fizyczną w miejscu pracy oraz omówiono ich skuteczność.

For the first time in Poland a multi-storey office building was demolished using a top-down method. Before the demolition was completed the building had been used as a testing ground for the medical and mountain rescue services, fire-fighting services and antiterrorist units.

W pracy przedstawiono i przeanalizowano programy nauczania geologii inżynierskiej na uczelniach prowadzących tę specjalność. Analiza została dokonana na studiach licencjackich (I-III) i magisterskich (IV-V). Wskazano potrzebę zmodyfikowania i unowocześnienia aktualnego programu, wyrażono pogląd stworzenia osobnych studiów (I-V) z geologii inżynierskiej. Ponadto zaprezentowano zakres i problematykę geologii inżynierskiej wg Statutu IAEG. Zostały określone początki geologii inżynierskiej jako dyscypliny nauk geologicznych. Sprecyzowano potrzeby dalszych zmian.

The syllabuses for engineering-geological courses of B.A (I-III) and M.Sc. (IV-V) studies in academic schools are presented and analyzed. The need to modify and update the current programme is emphasized and the establishment of separate engineering geological courses in accordance with the IAEG statutes is postulated. The beginnings of engineering geology as a separate discipline of the geological sciences are described. The particular needs for further changes are specified.

The aim of this study was to investigate the symmetry of gait kinematics in CP children who supplement traditional rehabilitation with excercises on BABS saddle. Two video cameras were used to record the left and right side of the body in sagittal plane while walking. Four to six strides were recorded and analyzed. To calculate the kinematic parameters SIMI MOTION was used. In this paper the walking symmetry of four CP children was decribed. They represented different abilities of walking: child 1/MJ and 10/ST walked independently, 6/SM needed somebody supporting him with two hands and 02/MR walked using support of an assistive mobility device. Children walking indepedently showed better symmetry than those needing assistance. This was seen especiall in step time, hip, knee and ankle linear (2D) displacement.

The model of control of body sway movements in quiet standing proposed by Winter (1998) predicts the role of passive control resulting from stiffness of ankle joint muscles. The objective of the present study was to evaluate if exercises of muscle contract-stretch type performed in particular joints of lower extremities and lumbo-pelvic-hip region would result in change of postural stiffness and of the remaining characteristics of viscoelastic model in control of quiet standing. The study group consisted of 14 men. The subjects were performing stretching exercises affecting the muscles of ankle, knee and hip joints as well as lumbo-pelvic-hip complex. Exercise sessions were preceded by 10-second stabilographic measurements in quiet standing with eyes closed. Out of all evaluated parameters only postural stiffness changed considerably and only after the stretching of lumbo-pelvic-hip complex.

W latach 1995/6-1998/9 na I roku kierunku Inżynieria Środowiska Wydziału Inżynierii Środowiska i Geodezji Akademii Rolniczej w Krakowie zrealizowano eksperymentalne kursy Geometrii Wykreślnej i rysunku technicznego w sposób mieszany - część zajęć tradycyjnie na sali ćwiczeń a część w pracowni komputerowej. Każdy ze studentów uczestniczył obowiązkowo w dwugodzinnych ćwiczeniach pokazowych przy komputerze, a następnie samodzielnie wykonywał proste konstrukcje. Zainteresowani mogli to kontynuować podczas nieobowiązkowych zajęć dodatkowych.

In the academie years 1995/6 - 1998/9, in the first year in the field of Environmental Engineering at Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Land Surveying at the Agricultural University of Cracow, an experiment was introduced to conduet the subject of descriptive geometry and technical drawing in a mixed format - some of the classes traditionally in the exercise room, and others in the Computer workroom. Each of the students was to take part obligatorily in two-hour demonstrative exercises at the Computer, towards the end of which he/she independently rehearsed simple construetions. Interested persons were then able to continue doing this during additional nonobligatory classes.
