This report provides insight into long-term changes in the position of groundwater table in the upland subregion of the middle Vistula River based on the research conducted in seven 1st order hydrogeological stations of the national groundwater monitoring network. These changes reveal a clear temporal relationship/trend noted in the vertical profile of aquifers even in conditions of their significant mutual isolation. They have been described as an effect of the phenomenon, but without establishing its measurable causes. The report indicates that the dynamic of groundwater pressure needs further studies and discussion of hydrogeologists dealing with this topic.

In the Gałęzice-Bolechowice-Borków region, located in the Holy Cross Mountains, several limestone and dolomite quarries are currently in operation. Deep drainage of these quarries caused the formation of a large regional depression cone that affected numerous groundwater intakes, including those supplying potable water for communes, and a large intake in the Dyminy quarter of Kielce. The range of the depression cone will increase in the future, both vertically and laterally, due to expanding extraction of industrial stones from continuously deepened mining levels. Prognoses of further changes of hydrologic conditions in the region and their impact on admissible volumes of groundwater resources available in particular intakes are calculated using the stationary mathematical model.

The Polish Geological Institute has been carrying out the tasks of the geological survey since its establishment in 1919. Hydrogeology was present from the very beginning and the groundwater monitoring became the systematic activity in the 2nd fifty years of the Institute’s life. Groundwater quantity monitoring expressed as measurements of groundwater table fluctuations was put into practice in 1972, while the groundwater quality monitoring that includes determination of chemical composition of water started in 1991. Both types of monitoring cover the entire area of Poland. Systematic hydrogeological observations and tests are one of the most important tasks carried out by hydrogeologists of the Polish Geological Institute. Results of these observations are used for many studies, analyses and forecasts carried out as part of the tasks of the hydrogeological survey, often in cooperation with universities and geological enterprises, for the needs of governmental and local administration and for reporting to the EU structures.

The central part of the Kielce-Łagów Synclinorium in the Holy-Cross Mts. is famous of numerous, assessed and prospective deposits of Middle Devonian limestones and dolomites. In order to determine the impact of dewatering operations in quarries on aquatic environment, a regional mathematical model was generated using the Visual Modflow software. The modelling allowed the authors to predict the range of planned dewatering operations and their influence on admissible volumes of groundwater in the surrounding water intakes. This would allow the local authorities to learn about the effects of changes in groundwater conditions at the early stages of negotiations of the quarry owners concerning the mining concessions beneath the groundwater table.
