The development of the interphase structure of polymer nanocomposites provides them with tribological properties difficult to obtain in traditional microfiller composites and microhybrid composites. In material solutions, it is preferable to modify the parameters of the material in order to obtain properties that are as close to the hard tissues of the teeth as possible. The aim of the study is to compare the wear resistance of new light-cured nanocomposites and to analyse the surface layer and structure before and after the wear process. Recently developed modern materials were selected for the study. In nanocomposites, G-aenial, G-aenial X FLO, and Essentia, an optimal structure was found in SEM images before and after wear, as well as low resistance to sliding friction and resistance to tribological wear. All tested composites were characterized by suitable properties for clinical applications.

Rozwinięcie struktury międzyfazowej nanokompozytów polimerowych nadaje im właściwości tribologiczne trudne do uzyskania w tradycyjnych kompozytach z mikrowypełniaczami i kompozytach mikrohybrydowych.
The clinical functionality of the prosthesis structure consists of creating the most convenient conditions without any traumatic effects of chewing forces on the substrate and adapting it to the individual biomechanical exclusions of the stomatognathic system (SS). When transferring functional loads, the optimization of tribological features and the ability to absorb energy is an important design and material parameter. The aim is to evaluate acrylic plastics intended for prostheses in terms of resistance to wear and resistance to movement in sliding contact within the environment of artificial saliva and their ability to absorb energy. Based on the analysis of the test results, it can be pointed out that Vertex is a good material for partial and complete dentures. Villacryl demonstrated similar properties, with Probase and Probase O being slightly worse. The appropriate mechanical parameters of the materials used in the prosthesis allow the production of thin plates that accurately reproduce the prosthetic substrate and improve the patient’s comfort of use through such a fit.

Prosthetic crowns reproduce the damaged hard structures of the patient’s own teeth and take over their natural functions, thus securing the correct reconstruction of the stomatognathic system. The aim is to evaluate the crowns for premolars and molars produced by casting, milling, and Selective Laser Melting technologies, in terms of the accuracy of reproducing the degree against the prosthetic pillar, the analysis of the surface layer structure of the step, and the micromechanical parameters of the alloy. The study material included CoCrMo alloy crowns. The conducted study allowed finding that the tightness of prosthetic crowns made using traditional casting technology as well as in SLM milling and technology is comparable and meets clinical requirements. Structural crown analyses confirmed the very good quality of the surface layer obtained with milling technology and SLM technology using the CAD/CAM method. SLM and digital milling allow the formation of precise and durable structures constituting the foundation of crowns in a time much shorter than the casting process.

Korony protetyczne odtwarzają uszkodzone twarde struktury zębów własnych pacjenta, przejmują ich naturalne funkcje i w ten sposób zabezpieczają prawidłową odbudowę układu stomatognatycznego. SLM i frezowanie metodą cyfrową pozwalają na wytworzenie precyzyjnych i wytrzymałych konstrukcji stanowiących podbudowy koron w czasie znacznie krótszym niż proces odlewniczy.
The aim of the study was to conduct strength analysis of a knee joint in order to experimentally determine the destructive fatigue loading under the conditions of cyclic compression. Animal joints were used as the study material. They were periodically subjected to variable axial loading. The degree of joint deformity and damage to articular surfaces and menisci were globally determined after isolation of the joint structures. The application of the variant of axial loading without slip and rolling results in the rupture of the medial meniscus, which is an important biotribological structure. Fatigue testing of the joints allowed for the determination of the parameters of biomechanical extortions, which lead to the loss of normal lubrication conditions and the degradation of the meniscus and cartilage structures on the femoral condyles.

Endoprosthesis stem fractures are among the rarest complications that occur after hip joint arthroplasty. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the causes of the fractures of the Aura II stem neck, which is an element of an endoprosthesis implanted in a patient. In order to achieve it, a radiogram was evaluated, the FEM analysis was carried out for the hip joint replaced using the Aura II prosthesis and scanning tests as well as a chemical analysis were performed for the focus of fatigue. The tests performed indicate that the most probable causes leading to the fatigue fracture of the Aura II stem under examination were material defects in the process of casting and forging (forging the material with delamination and the presence of brittle oxides and carbides) that resulted in a significant reduction of strength and resistance to corrosion. In the light of an unprecedented stem neck fracture, this information should be an indication for non-destructive tests of ready-made stems aiming to discover the material and technological defects that may arise in the process of casting and drop forging.
The functionality of a prosthesis is determined by clinical procedures, the manufacturing technology applied, the material used and its strength parameters. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the static strength and fatigue strength of acrylic construction materials directly after the process of polymerisation and for aged materials. It has been confirmed that the deformation speed of the tested materials has an evident impact on their mechanical characteristics. With greater deformation speed, a consistent increase in the material elasticity was observed in static compression tests, which was accompanied by a reduction in engineering stresses at the final stage of deformation. The greatest fatigue strength was observed for Vertex. It was by about 33% greater than the strength of Villacryl – the material that has the lowest fatigue properties. The resistance of acrylic polymers to cyclic loading applied with the frequency of 1 Hz may become an indication for the selection of the material to be used in the clinical procedures in which a patient is provided with full dentures.

Physiological abrasion of teeth is a process of gradual loss of the hard tissue of opposite teeth resulting from age-related natural dental wear. In abrasion, the cusps and their slopes in the jaw and the mandible become flattened due to the mechanical load applied. The aim of this paper is to carry out a tribological and microstructural evaluation of modern composite materials used to reconstruct the teeth in the lateral part of the dental arch. Five light-cured composite materials were selected for tests. The tests involved the coefficient of friction and resistance to wear in a sliding contact in the presence of artificial saliva and the microstructure of the external surface of samples before the wear process and in the wear-related damaged area. The test method applied, which combines a biomechanical analysis of resistance to wear and the analysis of the microstructure before the wear process and in the wear-related damaged area, makes it possible to evaluate the tribological properties of composite materials used to reconstruct teeth in the lateral part of the dental arch.

Do badań wybrano 5 materiałów kompozytowych utwardzanych światłem.
Hip replacement surgery, by introducing a specific replacement head on the stem and cup, completely changes the conditions of co-operation typical for the biological correct pair. The clinical selection of endoprosthesis, apart from other conditionings, involves a dilemma between the choice of a rigid tribological node and the selection of a susceptible bearing cushioning the locomotive loads. The aim of the study is to evaluate the coefficient of friction and wear resistance of materials used for sliding contact in the endoprostheses of hip joints. On the basis of the conducted tests, it can be stated that, in the selection of material for cups of endoprosthesis, the wear resistance is important, and the coefficient of friction in contact head and cup in the prosthesis is less important. The presence of significant disproportions between the two parameters of the tribological process proves that the biomaterial is less useful on the cup. In the assessment of cooperation in the endoprosthesis, simulations of the contact of structural elements are useful, because, on that basis, in the correlation with tribological parameters, one can make conclusions about the distribution of stresses and displacements that may determine the lifetime of the implant.

Zabieg alloplastyki stawu biodrowego poprzez wprowadzenie określonej zamiennej głowy na trzpieniu i panewki zmienia całkowicie warunki współpracy charakterystyczne dla biologicznej prawidłowej pary. Kliniczny dobór endoprotezy, oprócz innych uwarunkowań, wiąże się z dylematem pomiędzy wyborem sztywnego węzła tribologicznego a wyborem biołożyska podatnego, amortyzującego obciążenia lokomocyjne.
The aim of the conducted research was the evaluation of the topography and the structure of the superficial layer of meniscus and articular cartilage. These are surfaces that optimise the friction and lubrication process in the knee joint. The animal samples of the menisci and the articular cartilage were examined. The research was performed using scanning electron microscopes and an atomic force microscope. The structure of the surface of meniscus and articular cartilage is very regular. The collagenous fibres, which are embedded in the ground substance, are parallel to the surface. The undulation of the surface was observed. In the area of the anterior horn on tibia side of both menisci as well as in the anterior area of tibial plateau, the concavity and convexity pattern is evident. The observed cavities enable the accumulation of the synovial fluid. The synovial fluid plays the role of the lubricant in the knee joint, and its presence is highly desired during the load transmission.

Włókna kolagenowe biegnące równolegle do powierzchni i zatopione w substancji podstawnej tworzą łagodnie pofalowaną strukturę.
The purpose of the paper is to explain the friction conditions and the lubrication mechanism in healthy joints, based on rheological tests of synovial fluid and the identification of structures and the shape of articular surfaces. The tests were performed on cadaver preparations of large lower limp joints: hip, knee, and ankle joints. The analysis included combined experimental activities with the use of modern research and test techniques in the area of viscosity and microscopy as well as diagnostic imaging, image analysis, modelling, and FEM simulation. The tests performed allowed for the analysis of lubrication process which can be described as bioelastohydrodynamic lubrication (BEHL). The most important are viscoelasticity properties of the synovial fluid and the process whereby the external load is taken over by the pressure generated by a set of oil wedges of synovial fluid formed by naturally wavy articular surface. The multi-layer structure of the joints is characterised by variable wavy shape of cartilaginous surfaces and of bone tissue and by the variable wavy thickness of the cartilage.

Badano duże stawy kończyny dolnej: biodrowe, kolanowe i skokowe górne. Analiza obejmowała skojarzone działania eksperymentalne z wykorzystaniem nowoczesnych technik badawczych w obszarze lepkości i mikroskopii oraz diagnostyki obrazowej, analizy obrazu, modelowania i symulacji numerycznej MES.

The knee joint menisci are key structures of the joint. They are responsible for the correct joint performance. Their removal results in irreparable chondral damage. There are a few methods of menisci regeneration, but all of them have some limitation in application regard. Overcoming those limitation and creation an implant, which could substitute the anatomical meniscus, is still ongoing, but not yet finalised process.
Introduction and aims: In the knee joint are located two menisci, which play an essential role in the preservation of chondral surfaces and assurance of knee stability. Due to their activity during knee movement, they are strongly exposed to injury not only during professional sport training, but during normal, active life as well. In case of complex degeneration of the meniscal tissue, the regeneration help is needed. This help is provided by polyurethane or collagen meniscus scaffolds. Material and methods: The model of the right knee joint has been designed to in order to investigate the distribution of reduced stresses. The NASTRAN application has been used for calculations. Results: The distribution of the reduced stresses in the right knee joint model are presented in the article. Conclusion: Scaffold is a matrix that is designed to replace the damaged meniscal tissue. It is useful in case of complex tears, for which assessment of biomechanical function restoration after sewing is negative.

This paper presents a preoperative hip reconstruction method with diagnosed osteoarthritis using Durom Hip Resurfacing System (DHRS). The method is based on selection and application of the resurfacing to the pelvis reconstructed on the basis of computed tomography. Quality and geometrical parameters of distinguished tissues have a fundamental significance for locating and positioning the acetabular and femoral components. The application precedes the measurements of anatomical structures on a complex numerical model. The developed procedure enables functional selection of endo-prosthesis and its positioning in such a way that it secures geometric parameters within the bone bed and the depth , inclination angles and ante-version of the acetabular component, the neck-shaft angle and ante-torsion angle of the neck of the femoral bone, and reconstruction of the biomechanical axis of the limb and the physiological point of rotation in the implanted joint. Proper biomechanics of the bone-joint complex of the lower limb is determined by correlation of anatomical-geometrical parameters of the acetabular component and parameters of the femoral bone.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to generate a global digital model of treatment, analysis of stress distribution and displacements: in a construction of the bracket, in the incisor with bonded bracket, in tissues of the incisor, in a periodontal membrane and in an alveolus. Methods: An orthodontic therapy was provided with a three-dimensional model of a unique Cannon Ultra bracket. The placement of the bracket to the incisor was provided according to clinical standards. Composite material was placed between the rough surface of the bracket's base and labial incisor surface – which, in a digital model, resulted in contact without displacement. The bracket was loaded. An orthodontic arch wire was free to move in a wing slot of the bracket. For simplification, a force vector was parallel to the longitudinal axis of the incisor. A clamper was set on the surface of the cortical bone of the alveolus. The model was divided into a finite number of tetrahedral elements. To calculate the distribution of stress Ansys Workbench software was used. Results: The stress values indicate that there were no tissue overloaded areas. The stress distribution was regular in the periodontal ligament. Slight movements were observed with maximal values in the area of apex. Conclusions: This study simulation proves that tissues surrounding the tooth were influ-enced mechanically by the force loaded on the bracket. [...]

Purpose: The aim of the present paper was a question of structural identification and evaluation of strength parameters of Titanium (Ticp – grade 2) and its alloy (Ti6Al4V) which are used to serve as a base for those permanent prosthetic supplements which are later manufactured employing CAD/CAM systems. Methods: Microstructural tests of Ticp and Ti6Al4V were conducted using an optical microscope as well as a scanning microscope. Hardness was measured with the Vickers method. Micromechanical properties of samples: microhardness and Young’s modulus value, were measured with the Oliver and Pharr method. Results: Based on studies using optical microscopy it was observed that the Ticp from the milling technology had a single phase, granular microstructure. The Ti64 alloy had a two-phase, fine-grained microstructure with an acicular-lamellar character. The results of scanning tests show that titanium Ticp had a single phase structure. On its grain there was visible acicular martensite. The structure of the two phase Ti64 alloy consists of a β matrix as well as released α phase deposits in the shape of extended needles. Micromechanical tests demonstrated that the alloy of Ti64 in both methods showed twice as high the microhardness as Ticp. In studies of Young’s modulus of Ti64 alloy DMLS technology have lower value than titanium milling technology. Conclusions: According to the results obtained, the following conclusion has been drawn: when strength aspect is discussed, the DMLS method is a preferred one in manufacturing load structures in dentistry and may be an alternate way for the CAD/CAM system used in decrement processing.
