We synthesized the homologous series of 1-Alkyl-4-dimethylamino-pyridinum bromide C8-C22, which is very convenient model of cationic surfactants. The adsorption behavior of this series could be described by fitting the isotherm acc. to LANGMUIR and FRUMKIN equation, it shows distinct alternating with even/odd carbon numbers. The hydrophilic head groups possess a strong SHG activity, which leads to an independent description of the adsorption layer and to the determination of the orientation of molecules at the fluid surface. The surface excess of soluble amphiphiles can get calculated directly from SHG measurement and thus the factor m of the GIBBS equation is available by experimental means.
