The paper presents a method of hardware load prediction using workload models based on application categories and high-level characteristics. Application of the method to the problem of optimization of virtual machine scheduling in a heterogeneous Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) computing cloud is described.

Artykuł przedstawia metodę przewidywania obciążenia zasobów sprzętowych za pomocą modeli aplikacji opracowanych na podstawie kategoriii wysokopoziomowych charakterystyk. Opisano zastosowanie opracowanej metody do optymalizacji procesu alokacji zasobów sprzętowych dla maszyn wirtualnych w środowisku heterogenicznej chmury obliczeniowej typu Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

Multimedia stream processing into two cooperative different systems (cluster platform and virtual lab) is considered. The considered selected information about the system is presented and the idea of its communication when executing the distributed application is proposed. A general schema of the communication architecture is given. Tests of data transmission quality are considered and their results are presented.

Content available remote A Parallel Genetic Algorithm for Creating Virtual Portraits of Historical Figures

In this paper we present a genetic algorithm (GA) for creating hypothetical virtual portraits of historical figures and other individuals whose facial appearance is unknown. Our algorithm uses existing portraits of random people from a specific historical period and social background to evolve a set of face images potentially resembling the person whose image is to be found. We then use portraits of the person’s relatives to judge which of the evolved images are most likely to resemble his/her actual appearance. Unlike typical GAs, our algorithm uses a new supervised form of fitness function which itself is affected by the evolution process. Additional description of requested facial features can be provided to further influence the final solution (i.e. the virtual portrait). We present an example of a virtual portrait created by our algorithm. Finally, the performance of a parallel implementation developed for the KASKADA platform is presented and evaluated.

The subject matter of research work contains issues connected with open channel flows (with free fluid surface) and occurrences to be found in them. Free fluid surface flows are often observed in case of water plants, especially in water-power engineering and many others technical applications. Validity of deeper researches concerning occurrences to be appeared in free fluid surface flows come out internalia from fluid mechanics literature studies. There is no many data obtained as results of empirical fluid open flow researches. Most of usable formulas is based on simplified theoretical flow models or experimental experience of scientists. In the research work were taken up into the consideration few basic issues of mentioned flows velocity profiles in open channels, hydraulic jump occurrence etc. There was shown empirical verification results of well-known formulas located in professional literature, which describe mentioned above flow ocurrences based on contemporary measuring possibilities. Obtained results could be helpful for practicians engaged in design processes and usage of open flow installations.
