Szczególnym przykładem dzielnicy mieszkaniowej jest Główne Miasto Gdańska. W okresie powojennym trwały liczne dyskusje nad celowością odbudowy tej dzielnicy oraz nad tym, jak ma ona wyglądać i jakie pełnić funkcje. W ostateczności zdecydowano o odtworzeniu średniowiecznego układu urbanistycznego Głównego Miasta Gdańska. Kamienice odbudowano na nowych planach uwzględniających lepsze ich skomunikowanie, doświetlenie i przewietrzenie. Sposób odbudowy tej dzielnicy polegający między innymi na odtworzeniu frontów dawnych kamienic, ratowaniu kościołów i innych budowli zabytkowych spowodował, że Gdańsk jest obecnie szczególnym przykładem przestrzeni miejskiej: nowej, choć stwarzającej wrażenie bardzo wiekowej. W mieście takim jak Gdańsk ważne są nie tylko istniejące zabytki architektury, ale również substancja mieszkaniowa. Równomierna troska o obiekty zabytkowe, ale i budynki mieszkalne dają szansę na intensywny rozwój tego rejonu. W sytuacji, gdy Główne Miasto stanowi rejon mieszkaniowy, istnieje konieczność uwzględnienia potrzeb jego mieszkańców w sposób równorzędny z potrzebami miasta, jakimi są jego popularyzacja i prezentacja.

The Main City of Gdańsk is a unique place for living. After the war discussions have been carried on about the purpose of rebuilding this district, about the functions it should fulfill and how the city should look. As a result it's been decided to reproduce the medieval urban layout of the Main City. The goal was to create the better conditions for living in new buildings. The houses were constructed on new plans, considering better communication, lighting and ventilation. The way the city was rebuilt, including recreating the old facades, rebuilding old churches and other historic constructions, caused the Gdańsk is currently the unique example of the city space: it is actually new but making an impression of venerable. Because the Main City is the residential area, the inhabitants needs have to be taken into account in the same degree that the city needs as its popularization and presentation are. In city such as Gdańsk, important are not only existing architectural monuments and historical buildings but also the housing substance.

Muzeum jako przestrzeń publiczna współczesnego miasta

Obserwacja współczesnych muzeów pokazuje, że zarówno kuratorzy, jak i architekci upatrują w muzeach przyszłość dla rozwiązywania problemów miejskich struktur. Dotyczy to zwłaszcza rejonów zaniedbanych, ale i tych uznawanych za atrakcyjne. Dostrzeżenie związków pomiędzy miastem, a muzeum pozwala zmieniać wizerunek miasta. Odejście od modelu muzeum, jako przestrzeni skupionej wyłącznie na własnej działalności stanowi istotny czynnik kształtujący nowe formy muzealne. We współczesnych muzeach więc poszukuje się idei czynienia z muzeów fragmentów miasta o charakterze publicznym. Odchodzi się tym samym od tworzenia elitarnych miejsc skierowanych do wybranej grupy społecznej. Współczesne muzea mają posiadać nie tylko ciekawe zbiory, ale muszą również wpisywać się w miasto jako integralny jego element, który niesie ze sobą funkcje wzbogacające kalendarz wydarzeń w mieście. Podjęcie tego zagadnienia jest kluczowym zadaniem dla architektów projektujących muzea.

Observation of the modern museums shows up that curators and architects see the museum as the solution for the problems of the city structures. It especially refers to the neglected and destroyed regions but also the regions that are seen as attractive. By detecting the relation between the city and the museum it is possible to change the city image. By resigning the model of the museum as a space focused only on its own typical activity it is possible to create a new museum forms. Newly constructed museums have the goal to integrate themselves with the city space. Both, the form and the interior organization have to make a museum the exceptional for the recipient. What is important for this object is the idea because it becomes the public fragment of the city. Museums are no longer the exclusive places available only for the chosen social class. Contemporary museums have to present the interesting exhibit, and furthermore, they have to integrate with the city as the objects that enrich its calendar of events. Taking this concern is the key task for the architect designing the museum.
