The oral cavity due to its temperature fluctuations, changing pH, high humidity, action of mechanical forces and the presence of microorganisms is a favorable environment for degradation of dental materials. The paper presents comparative results on orthodontic arch-wires AISI304 steel before and after low temperature plasma nitriding carried out at cathodic potential (conventional) and at plasma potential, i.e. in a process incorporating an active screen. Corrosion resistance test on nitrided layers produced on stainless steel were carried out via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the potentiodynamic method in non-deaerated artificial saliva solution at 37°C. The results were complemented with analysis of the structure, surface topography and microhardness. The results showed an increase in corrosion resistance of AISI304 steel after conventional glow-discharge nitriding.
Impairment of the cardiovascular system is a major cause of mortality in humans. Cardiac implants are made mostly of titanium and its alloys and various methods have been used to improve their surface properties. Titanium nitride — TiN and titanium oxide — TiO2 surface layers are promising materials to improve biocompatibility in this respect. Modifying their surface properties in the nanoscale may impact their protein adsorption and cellular response to the implant. Nitriding and oxynitriding processes in low-temperature plasma, also involving the use of an active screen, seem to be prospective methods in the production of titanium nitride and oxide forming an diffusive outer zone of titanium nitride TiN (nanocrystalline) + Ti2N + α-Ti(N) or oxynitrided TiO2(nanocrystalline) + TiN + Ti2N + α-Ti(N) surface layers on titanium alloy. Also a hybrid method that combines oxidizing and the RFCVD process for producing a-C:N:H (amorphous carbon modified with nitrogen and hydrogen) + TiO2 (nanocrystalline titanium oxide-rutile)-type composite surface layers on NiTi shape memory alloys is noteworthy in the context of medical applications. The paper presents the characteristics of these diffusion multi-phase layers in terms of their microstructure, topography, hardness, residual stress, corrosion and wear resistance, wettability as well as biological properties such as: adsorption of proteins — fibrinogen and albumin, and platelet adhesion during interaction with blood components (human plasma and platelet-rich plasma). The results suggest that these layers, produced using the new hybrid processes, exhibit a high potential for improving cardiac implant properties. The article is based on research carried out by the authors and the interpretation of the obtained results is made on the basis of literature data regarding the surface layers of titanium oxides and titanium nitride produced by various methods.

Studies on biocompatibility of AISI 316LVM steel indicate the need to eliminate the nickel from the surface and replace it with other elements of improved biocompatibility. Therefore, in the presented work selected physicochemical and mechanical properties of the diffusive nitrocarburized layer formed by plasma potential by means of an active screen made of the Fe-Cr-Ni were studied. In the paper we present results of microstructure and phase composition of the layers, roughness, and surface wettability, potentiodynamic pitting corrosion resistance, penetration of ions into the solution as well as mechanical properties. The studies were conducted for the samples of both mechanically polished and nitrocarburized surfaces, after sterilization, and exposure to the Ringer’s solution. Deposition of the nitrocarburized layer increased the contact angle, surface roughness, surface hardness, and corrosion resistance with respect to the polished surfaces. The nitrocarburized layer is a barrier against the ions release into the solution and sterilization and exposure to Ringer solution. The obtained results showed beneficial increase of both mechanical and electrochemical properties of the deposited layer, and thus the applicability of the proposed method of surface treatment of the 316 LVM steel for short-term implants after sterylization.

The phenomenon of corrosion of orthodontic appliances is of interest to both clinicians and researchers dealing with the issue of biocompatibility of medical materials. The oral cavity, due to its temperature fluctuations, changing pH, high humidity, action of mechanical forces and the presence of microorganisms is a favorable environment for degradation of dental materials. This article presents the comparative assessment of the intensity of corrosion of orthodontic archwires made of alloy steel, nickel–titanium and titanium–molybdenum alloys in laboratory conditions. Corrosion resistance examinations were carried out by means of the impedance and the potentiodynamic methods using an Autolab PGSTAT100 potentiostat/galwanostat (Eco Chemie B.V., Holand) with FRA2 module, in non-deaerated artificial saliva solution at 37 °C. An analysis of the impendence method's data showing that the highest corrosion resistance is observed for NiTi arches (3M, USA), while the lowest resistance for SS arches (3M, USA). These observations were confirmed by the data obtained from potentiodynamic tests; it was observed that the average corrosion current density [Icor] was the lowest for nickel–titanium archwires (3M, USA) and averaged 2.50 × 10−3 μA/cm2. The highest Icor corrosion current was observed in the case of steel wires from the same manufacturer and averaged 4.96 × 10−2 μA/cm2.

Wyniki uzupełniono badaniami mikrostruktury wytwarzanych warstw i pomiarami chropowatości powierzchni. Uzyskane wyniki wykazały, że rodzaj procesu azotonawęglania wpływa na mikrostrukturę i odporność korozyjną wytwarzanych warstw powierzchniowych.

Two-phase Ti6Al4V titanium alloy, due to its vanadium content and carcinogenic properties exposed during metallosis, is slowly being replaced by so-called vanadium-free titanium alloys, e.g. Ti6Al7Nb, demonstrating a similar level of durability. Comparative studies have been carried out on the corrosion resistance of Ti6Al7Nb alloy before and after glow-discharge nitrocarburizing carried out at cathodic potential and at plasma potential, i.e. in a process incorporating an active screen. Corrosion resistance tests of nitrocarburized layers produced on Ti6Al7Nb alloy were carried out via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the potentiodynamic method in Ringer’s solution at 37°C. The results also included information on the microstructure of the obtained layers and surface roughness measurement data. The study showed that the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the surface layers obtained differed depending on the nitrocarburizing process employed.
Przedmiotem pracy były badania weryfikujące nowe koncepcje w obszarze projektowania kompozytowych dyfuzyjnych warstw azotku tytanu wytwarzanych na stopie magnezu AZ91D celem poprawy jego właściwości użytkowych w zakresie odporności korozyjnej i tribologicznej. W pracy przedstawiono porównanie wyników badań struktury i właściwości użytkowych trzech wariantów kompozytowych dyfuzyjnych warstw azotku tytanu wytwarzanych na stopie AZ91D w oparciu o opracowane innowacyjne hybrydowe rozwiązania inżynierii powierzchni łączące metody PVD z uszczelniającą obróbką hydrotermiczną. Badaniom poddano warstwy powierzchniowe w wariantach: a) wielowarstwy typu (TiN/Ti)x8 składającej się z naprzemiennie ułożonych cienkich podwarstw azotku tytanu i tytanu; b) warstwy typu TiN-Ti-Al złożonej z zewnętrznej warstwy azotku i uprzednio wytworzonych podwarstw tytanu i aluminium; c) warstwy nowego rodzaju typu (TiN/Ti)x8-Ti-Al łączącej oba warianty, zbudowanej z zewnętrznej wielowarstwy (TiN/Ti)x8 i podwarstw tytanu i aluminium.

The aim of the present study was to verify new concepts in development of titanium nitride composite diffusive layers produced on AZ91D magnesium alloy in order to improve performance properties, in particular corrosion and wear resistance. The composite layers were produced by a hybrid method, which combine the layers deposition using PVD processes and hydrothermal tightening. The microstructure and the effect of three variants of the composite layers on the corrosion and wear resistance of AZ91D alloy were examined. These variants were: a) (TiN/Ti)x8 type multilayer layer composed of titanium nitride/titanium sub-layers system; b) TiN-Ti-Al type layer of titanium nitride outside layers with titanium and aluminum sub-layers: c) (TiN/Ti)x8-Ti-Al new type of the composite layer that combine both other type of the composite layers built of (TiN/Ti)x8 outside titanium nitride multilayer with titanium and aluminum sub-layers. The result of the investigation indicate that the optimum effect on the increase of the performance properties of AZ91D alloy exhibits the (TiN/Ti)x8-Ti-Al type layer. This is manifested by the appearance of a large passive range with a positive break down potential, higher than +2000 mV and wear resistance comparable to the resistance of the 100Cr6 bearing steel.
Due to its high mechanical properties the 32CDV13 steel is widely used in the industry for the production of highly loaded parts of machines and equipment. The increase in the durability and the reliability of elements is currently being achieved by using conventional methods of surface treatments: carburizing processes, burnishing and surface hardening. Hybrid processes constitute an alternative to these solutions, leading to obtaining of composite layers. They combine two or more techniques during surface treatments, enabling the formation of surface layers with unique and complementary properties. This paper presents the structure (light microscopy, SEM) and the results of friction wear resistance (“ball on disc” method) of composite layers produced on heat treated 32CDV13 steel after it was (hardness 36 HRC) subjected to the hybrid process which combined the glow discharge nitriding process and phosphating method. The results show improvement of tribological properties, especially reduction of friction coefficient in comparison to nitrided layer.

Modern industry expects comprehensive solutions in terms of ensuring adequate exploitation properties of materials, such as high hardness, wear resistance, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance in aggressive environments. These requirements can be met via surface treatments, especially vigorously developed in recent years hybrid technologies, which merge various methods in the aspect of composite layers production. Those layers are characterized by complementing or entirely new properties in comparison to layers or coatings manufactured in separate processes. In this study the plasma nitriding process and electroless nickel plating are combined. In the production of composite layers consisting of surface layer and coating, in this particular case it is essential to ensure good adhesion of the Ni(P) coating to nitrided substrate. This paper presents microstructure (light microscopy), microhardness (crosssection and surface), surface roughness and scratch test results after different variants and steps of treatment of heat treated 1.2343 (WCL) steel. The study was conducted on the nitrided layers varying in structure and surface topography due to grinding prior to electroless nickel plating. The results show that heat treatment subsequent to electroless nickel plating leads to increase in composite layers’ hardness and adhesion of Ni(P) coating to nitrided layer. Moreover, Ni(P) coating might act as a solid lubricant in some cases.

The manufacturing of surface layers are increasingly used in industry, as the effective method of improving the useful properties of the machine parts. The specific properties of the nitrided layers such as low temperature of process may be an alternative to the commonly used technology like high-temperature carburizing or carbonitriding in the aerospace industry. The article presents the results obtained after nitriding of complex samples made with 32CDV13 steel. As our research improves the properties of surfaces can be controlled by the process parameters as temperature, duration time, composition of the reactive atmosphere, the pressure (vacuum) and the activation of the surface by cathode sputtering process in the initial stage of the treatment.

The paper presents an analysis of tribological wear of an assembly composed of cylinder liner and piston rings in a piston aircraft engine. In place of the previously used technology of gas nitriding of the cylinder liner (made out of 38CrAlMo6‒10 steel), formation of multi-component or composite layers by nitriding in plasma discharge environment was proposed. Also, a modification of the previously used chromium coating of the piston rings by plasma nitriding was proposed. A study on the structure and properties of surface layer diffusion manufactured by utilizing the phenomenon of cathode sputtering was carried out. Wear resistance tests were performed on a specially designed bench, with the use of isotope markers. Verification of each of the friction couples was based on using the wear of the ring as a function of the distance trip, and the roughness of the cylinder liner and ring.

The paper presents the results of physicochemical and mechanical properties of the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy with surface modified by formation of a diffusive nitrocarburized layer deposited in a low-temperature plasma process. The main aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of steam sterilization and exposure to Ringer’s solution on the utility properties of the alloy. Methods: Based on the study of the microstructure, roughness, wettability, resistance to pitting corrosion, ion infiltration and mechanical properties, the usefulness of the proposed method of surface treatment for clinical application was proven. Results: Deposition of the nitrocarburized layer increased the surface roughness and surface hardness, but also reduced the contact angle, and corrosion resistance with respect to the polished surfaces. The nitrocarburized layer is a barrier against the infiltration of ions to the solution and sterilization and exposure to Ringer solution have greater effect on the physicochemical properties rather than on the mechanical ones. Conclusion: It was found that sterilization, and exposure to Ringer’s solution greatly affect the change of physicochemical properties rather than mechanical properties for both nitrocarburized layers and the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy of mechanically polished surface.

NiTi shape memory alloys are used for cardiological and bone implants. However on account of the metallosis effect, i.e. the migration of the alloy constituents into the surrounding tissues, they are submitted to various surface treatment processes in order to improve their corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, without affecting the shape memory properties that need to be maintained. Comparative studies on the corrosion resistance of NiTi alloys both prior to and after nitriding in low-temperature plasma at a temperature of 300°C are presented. Nitriding under glow discharge conditions was conducted on samples with varying surface roughness. Examinations via the potentiodynamic and impedance spectroscopy methods (EIS) were carried out in Hank’s and Ringer’s solutions at 37°C. Corrosion resistance tests were supplemented by morphology and roughness tests of the surface of NiTi alloy both with and without a diffusive layer. The obtained results show an increase in the corrosion resistance of NiTi alloys after nitriding. There was a significant impact of surface roughness on the corrosion resistance of NiTi alloy both with and without a nitrided layer.

The nitrided surface layers TiN + Ti2N + αTi(N) type produced under glow discharge conditions have a diffusion character. Their surface physicochemical properties can be modified by processing conditions, such as the execution of the process on the potential of the cathode or in plasma region (active screen plasma nitriding). The paper presents the results of nitrided surface layers produced in low-temperature plasma applying the cathode potential or the active screen. Obtained data of surface topography, the microstructure (SEM), surface roughness (AFM, optical profilometer), chemical composition (EDS, SIMS) and wettability are discussed in context biological properties of platelets. Studies have shown a larger thickness with a lower nitrogen content and a greater roughness of the layer formed on the cathode potential as compared with the layer formed on the plasma potential. Simultaneously on the surface of the titanium nitride layer produced on the cathode potential were less platelets adhesion and they were less activated than on the second layer. Thus, the results show that the relevant properties of the surface can restrict blood clotting and titanium nitride layer produced on the cathode potential could be applied in the production of cardiological implants.
Stal gat.

The tool steel of the HS6-5-2 (SW7M) grade is used to manufacture cutting tools (milling cutters, drills, screw-taps). In mass production of these tools a prospective trend towards increasing their life and reliability – as our studies proved it – are nitriding processes in low-temperature plasma at cathode potential as well as in plasma zone. These processes enable complete control of the microstructure, phase and chemical composition of created diffusion layers, state of their internal stresses, surface topography, hardness and fatigue strength. The nitriding processes in low-temperature plasma at temperature 420÷500°C enables creation of diffusion layers with release of chromium nitride characterised by good wear resistance, low friction factor and increased corrosion resistance. This article presents microstructure, surface topographie and phase composition in connection with their wear resistance and corrosion.
Constructions of the mechanical-bearingless centrifugal blood pumps utilize different types of non-contact physical bearings, which allows to balance the forces that have an impact on the pump impeller, stabilizing its position in the pump house without wall contact. The paper presents investigations of the hybrid (passive magnetic bearings and hydrodynamic bearings) suspension system for the centrifugal blood pump. Numerical simulations were used to evaluate the hydrodynamic bearing lifting force and magnetic bearing forces interaction. An important aspect of rotor suspension system design was the nominal gap in hydrodynamic bearing area in order to reduce the blood damage risk in this region. The analyses results confirmed that for a small diameter centrifugal pump, the nominal operating hydrodynamic bearing gap could be established within the range from 0.033 to 0.072 mm.
