Dynamiczny rozwój systemów pozyskiwania energii odnawialnej, a także racjonalizacja gospodarki cieplnej, przyczyniły się 10 lat temu do budowy Laboratorium Geoenergetyki na Wydziale Wiertnictwa, Nafty i Gazu AGH w Krakowie. Jednym z ważnych czynników decydujących o budowie są wcześniejsze prace nad wykorzystaniem wyeksploatowanych i negatywnych otworów do celów geotermalnych. Prowadzone aktualnie w Laboratorium badania dzisiaj i jego funkcje zostały opisane w niniejszym artykule. Laboratorium bazuje na różnych typach otworowych wymienników ciepła. Zostały one zbadane pod kątem ich efektywnej przewodności cieplnej λef i odporności termicznej Rb. Przeprowadzone w nich testy reakcji termicznej wykorzystano do opracowania metodyki i weryfikacji testów przewodnictwa cieplnego wymienników otworowych.

The dynamic development of renewable energy recovery systems and also the rationalization of heat management gave spur to the 10 year construction agh of the Geoenergetics Laboratory at the Drilling, Oil and Gas Faculty AGH University of Science and Technology (DOGF AGH-UST) in Krakow. One of the important factors deciding about the build are previous works on adapting depleted and negative wells. Research carried out at the Laboratory up today and its usability functions are described in the paper. The laboratory is based on various types of borehole heat exchangers. They were investigated in view of their design for their effective thermal conductivity λef and thermal resistance Rb. The thermal response tests were used for elaborating the BHE thermal conductivity test. It can be used for optimizing the structure and technology of the exploitation of large underground heat storages with borehole heat exchangers. This system can co-operate with various types of solar collectors which in an appropriate climate zone may be a perfect source to be used for charging underground heat storage.
The following work presents investigation of possible drilling of overburden rocks, right above the gas reservoir, in shale rock formations with potential application of rotary-percussion drilling method in Podlasie Basin region. Extensive description of lithology of shale rocks together with their age, maturity of the organic matter and thickness of particular layers have been presented. Due to different thickness of formations, the depths of layers are not indicated, as it would be too big of approximation. Variously scaled and averaged thickness of particular formation layers was given in order to maintain maximum transparency of the paper. It should be noted that the formation rocks of the Devonian as well as Carboniferous period do not occur in all profiles of the Paleozoic period of the Podlasie Basin but only in the south-western part of the basin. Locally occurring (i.e. on the south-eastern border of the Podlasie basin) layers of the Devonian and Carboniferous period were omitted. A stratigraphic profile with preserved proportions between the average thicknesses of particular formation layers was constructed and presented in latter part of the research paper. The research carried out in this paper was complemented with estimates of Polish shale gas resources. The Baltic Basin region is by far most prospective area for shale gas exploitation when it comes to documented as well as undocumented resources. The areas of Podlasie as well as Lublin Basins are second and third most rich areas of this resource. Percussion-rotary drilling method enables for much higher penetration rates using similar weight on bit and rotational speed as in standard rotary drilling method. Following papers answers questions such as: under what conditions application of percussion-rotary technique is possible or what drilling fluids are the most suitable for such method. The percussion-rotary drilling method not only guarantees faster drilling but also leaves borehole much more straight and without unnecessary dog legs. Drilling rig and down hole equipment used for percussion-rotary drilling method takes much less space in comparison with standard rotary rigs for deep drilling and could be potentially implemented for drilling shale gas wells in Podlasie Basin region.

The Geoenergetics Laboratory at the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas in Krakow is presented in this paper to mark its 10th anniversary. The origins of the Laboratory, its equipment and the design of borehole heat exchangers belonging to the field research station are also discussed. Recently, the construction of 14 new borehole heat exchangers was designed and the boreholes will be drilled in the area of AGH University. They will perform heating and cooling for the new S1 building of the University. Every borehole heat exchanger will be tested, with the effective thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistivity calculated after a thermal response test on every borehole. The difference between boreholes should show the difference of borehole thermal resistivity, but the effective thermal conductivity should be the same.
Iceland is known to be a one of the leading countries in geothermal energy research, mainly due to its unique geological location and active volcanism. Around 90% of heating and hot water requirements in Icelandic households are provided by geothermal energy sources. Process of drilling a geothermal well is not an easy procedure as it involves consideration of many different aspects prior to drilling in order to avoid unexpected accidents and ensure safe drilling operations. Recent case studies from Iceland have shown that use of low enthalpy geothermal resources with heat pumps might be even more efficient than risky and expensive deep high-temperature drilling escapades. The geothermal drilling technology currently being in use in Iceland for low and high temperature geothermal wells and previous successful case scenarios are thought to be undeniably helpful for growing interests in low enthalpy geothermal resources in Poland. In following work, many aspects related to drilling of geothermal wells in Lądek-Zdrój, Sochaczew and Konstantynów Łódzki are presented. Positive outcome of these drilling escapades will have a major impact on development of geothermal systems in Poland. Additionally, most important matters of well testing of mentioned wells are described.

Wymienniki te i pompy ciepła umożliwiają ogrzewanie i chłodzenie (klimatyzację) obiektów budowlanych.

The fast development of low-temperature geothermal energy affects the search for newer and newer solutions and materials used in the construction of borehole heat exchangers. One of the most important factors affecting the correct operation of heat pump systems with borehole heat exchangers is appropriately selected solidified grout. Solidifies grout has to be characterized by the highest thermal conductivity and good sealing borehole heat exchangers. The paper will present the impact of graphite on the thermal conductivity of solidified grout.
The world’s demand for energy is constantly increasing mainly due to population growth and improved living standards. Currently, the share of electricity generation is 37 of the global primary energy consumption. Fossil-based electricity production is accounted for 68 of the total generation with coal, the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel, being the largest contributor (41) to the world’s electricity supply in 2012. Electricity demand is projected to grow rapidly and is also expected to be 70 higher in 2035, than the current demand. The Polish energy sector is heavily dependent on coal, resulting in large CO2 emission per capita. Poland has considerable potential for geothermal energy production, as there is a large number of deep, abandoned wells that might be utilized for geothermal energy production. Utilizing these resources would contribute to the CO2 emission reduction without negative impact on security of energy supply. Following paper describes method of reconstructing negative or abandoned oil and gas wells for Deep Borehole Heat Exchangers (DBHE). In many old boreholes, exploiting underground geothermal waters is impossible, thus adaptation for DBHE is sometimes the only option to utilize geothermal heat reservoirs. The insulated coaxial inner column which enables the circulation of heat carrier plays the crucial role in effective functioning of DBHE systems. Vacuum Insulated Tubing (VIT) can improve heat production as well as increase efficient energy use. This technique found plethora of applications in offshore and onshore deep drilling and production. Throughout recent years, VIT technology is being more commonly applied in geothermal industry. Negative or abandoned wells could be reconstructed for DBHE. To maximize the heat uptake from such boreholes, it is advised to use inner column made from material with lowest possible thermal conductivity coefficient. Article deals with possible application of vacuum pipes as inner column in deep coaxial borehole heat exchangers.
For the correct design, the number and the location of borehole heat exchangers, it is necessary to know thermal properties of rocks and the exchanger. This applies particularly to larger installations, more than 100 kW. One of the methods of determining these values is Thermal Response Test. This method is based on measurements in the first drilled borehole heat exchanger. Based on results of the TRT geothermal analysis is made. The analysis defines: the number of wells, the arrangement of wells, and the parameters of temperature of heat carrier after long-term use. This analysis based on calculations using specialist software. This paper presents the determination of the number of borehole heat exchangers and working conditions (temperature of the heat carrier) of an underground heat reservoir accessed using borehole heat exchangers for the building of the Primary School in Myszków.
Thermal Response Test (TRT) is a standard test performed in borehole heat exchangers (BHE), which provides thorough understanding of thermal parameters of surrounding rock mass. Following work consists of calculations for hydraulic power and pressure losses along the BHE’s length. Analysis was carried out in eight BHE’s with different diameters, lengths and heat carriers in various areas throughout Poland. In accordance with TRT results, potential power exchanged between BHE and rock mass was determined. In order to find relations between pressure losses and volumetric flow rate, hydraulic tests in average static temperature of rock mass and during heating period were investigated. Proportions between hydraulic power and total power exchange with rock mass are also presented in following research.

A review, with 28 refs., of compn. of Polish geothermal waters and processes for prodn. of NaCl and Li compds.
Projects involving borehole heat exchangers more often need to undergo a series of tests before implementation. Inserted pipes and cement in the borehole may have diff erent thermal properties. Until recently, such values were determined in approximate, based on values taken from the literature. Special methods are used more often to perform this type of work in order to correctly determine the properties of a borehole heat exchanger. The aim of the study was to present an analysis of thermal properties of borehole heat exchangers with the main emphasis on parameters such as thermal conductivity and thermal resistance. The analyzed data was obtained through the use of three methods:– analysis of the lithological profi le with rock conductivity based on the literature,– analysis of natural temperature profi le in aborehole heat exchanger (logger NIMO-T),– thermal response test.
The climatic conditions and the heating and cooling load between Ghent, Belgium, and Krakow, Poland, are compared. The cost of heating and cooling is calculated and compared. Heating in Belgium is done by using natural gas, just like in Poland, but due to higher gas prices, cost of heating is higher in Belgium than in Poland. That is why an interesting alternative for heating and cooling, namely borehole heat exchanger coupled with a heat pump, is calculated. This seems to be an economic and environmentally friendly alternative for heating and cooling.
'Faster, deeper, cheaper' -it is not just a slogan, it is a motto of every oil company. The first application of rotary--percussion drilling method in drilling oil wells took place in early 60's of the XX century in the United States. Unfortunately, in Poland did not apply. First of all, the main advantage is the inereased rate of penetration, in comparison with standard rotary drilling, and consequently - lower wellbore costs. The purpose of present paper is to discuss the historical background of application of rotary-percussion drilling method, technological changes that have oceurred over the years, and to show the potential of this drilling method, using modern technology, in comparison with standard rotary method.
The article presents an overview of developing unconventional geothermal systems, such as Hot Dry Rock Systems (HDR), where is used the heat of dry rock and enhanced system with smali water tributary called Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). These systems provide utilization of geothermal energy in reservoirs (i.a. granites) where conventional methods are not possible to use. Operation HDR/EGS involves the use rock heating through warming medium, which flowing between the production and injection boreholes. In most cases medium introduced artifically by hydraulic fracturing. Currently, most of the projects HDR/EGS is in the implementation phase. Based on gathered materials an analysis of the construction and exploitation geothermal systems. Take into account geological and drilling aspects.
Porównano dwa najpopularniejsze programy: British Establishment Environmental Assessments Method (BREEAM) i Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Due to rising prices of mineral resources and energy, sustainable development in construction industry became an important scientific problem. Recently, sustainable building engineering problem is the base of research for many scientific and development centers. There is a lot of methods of labeling buildings’ influence on the environment and comparing building objects. Several of them were presented in this article and the best-known Building Establishment Environmental Assessments Method (BREEAM) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) were compared. The set of standards that were elaborate in order to standardize the methods of a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of the building were also submitted. In addition, the article presented model of environmental assessment of building, that was developed in Laboratory of Geoenergetics at Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas AGH-UST, based on currently existing systems, in particular E-audit and BREEAMprograms. This model was expanded to cover issues that are not used in currently applied programs, and which concern the proposals arising from the operation of underground heat storages. The research project, that was designed to determine the advisability of heat storage in the ground was summarize. New solutions connected with geological and energetic fields of science were proposed. According to the authors, these ideas should be applied for complex evaluation of the building, especially in polish climate conditions.
In the article, there has been described research conducted in underground thermal energy storage (UTES). There have been also presented temperature measurements led in thermo-piezometric boreholes. On the basis of the measurements, the correctness assessment of borehole heat exchangers (BHE) arrangement has been accomplished.
This work reviews possibility of using the heat from impermeable hot dry rock formations. Significant development in hydraulic fracturing technique in a last few years have a result in making accessible sources of energy from impermeable rocks, including hot dry rocks, which wasn't possible before. This paper presents the idea of utilization the EGS system which is based on forced and closed water circulation in a natural and permeable geological reservoir or in a reservoir, where the fractured zone was created artificially by for example hydraulic fracturing treatment. The article shows also an examples of recent EGS/HDR systems around the world.
Program dopasował do badanego zaczynu model Herschleya-Bulkleya.
