This study deals with the development of ship watch keeping supporting aids that will be useful for ship deck officers in recognizing navigational harmful obstacles such as sea marks and small floating objects on the sea. The developed watch keeping supporting aids is made up of four components; a composite video sensor to produce video signal, a laser distance measuring part, a Pan/Tilt part and a central control part. The system was installed in a ship in order to verify its performance of the recognition ability on the sea. The comparison was made between the recognition ability of the system and that of watch keeping deck officers’. The image from the watch keeping supporting system was found to be more recognizable than that of a binocular telescope within a 5 km distance. The newly suggested system is expected to be used to recognize small dangerous floating objects more easily when navigation deck officers have a duty of watch keeping for navigation especially near harbor area.

In the era of e‐Navigation, the future VTS is anticipated to play an important role on the enhancement of maritime safety and the efficiency of maritime transport as a key stakeholder of e‐Navigation. The VTS services need the advanced Traffic Organization Service(TOS). In this paper, the VTS functions for TOS is revisited from the reports of IMO e‐Navigation Correspondence Group and IALA VTS Committee. In Korea, the research activities to enhance the existing VTS functions have been conducted. In terms of TOS, some VTS functions have been developed. In conclusion, all the past traffic data and real‐time ship data are required to provide the advanced TOS. For this, the advanced functions to support TOS should be implemented on VTS console.

This research aims at investigating the user requirements at the service level for safe navigation system, following e-navigation strategy implementation plan. The user requirements is surveyed to collect real-time navigational information and then to find out services through the presentation of the collected information. To provide the information on user needs for the system developer, a questionnaire survey has been made. Based on this surveys, this research investigated which navigational information is with higher priority for the safe navigation during ship operation by bridge team in harbour and in coastal and confined.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań wymagań użytkownika związanych z poziomem bezpieczeństwa nawigacji, stosownie do strategii wprowadzania e-nawigacji.

This paper aims at evaluating the collision risk between the encountering vessels under time- -variant CPA situations and then assessing the maritime traffic characteristics. Radar and AIS data are collected from Mokpo VTS in Korea. All crossing vessels that are navigating within CPA 1 miles of Mokpo-Gu waterway are analyzed. The maritime traffic characteristics is analyzed by surveying the distribution of CPA as a function of TCPA. To make it clear, the traffic operating rate in the Mokpo waterway is also computed. The averages of CPA and TCPA were observed until the encountered vessels pass safety each other after they come in a certain ship domain. As a consequence, the distribution of CPA as a function of TCPA gives a useful information to evaluate the maritime traffic safety.

Content available remote The Relation with Width of Fairway and Marine Traffic Flow
EN
Nowadays, many of changes have arisen in maritime traffic due to the enlargement of ship’s size and improvement of ship’s speed. It is common that the risks of handling a ship in narrow water area is increasing according to increase traffic volume. In order to correspond to these changes and risks, it should be necessary to make sure the relation between proper width of route in fairway and allowable traffic volume. The conventional method of designing a fairway takes into consideration of movement by one ship of maxi-mum size. But the congestion by traffic volume is not taken in the concept. In a while, a case of road design is generally considered about a traffic volume. From such a view point, this research proposes the method of de-termining fairway-width in consideration of traffic flow. To evaluate traffic congestion in a route, the Envi-ronmental Stress model is adopted as the index of standard, using traffic simulation with avoiding a collision for reproducing traffic flow.

This paper introduces and presents a strategy for ensuring safety during control of vessel inter-action in real time. A measure of danger during the interaction is explicitly computed, based on factors affect-ing the impact force during a potential collision between an object and the vessel. A motion strategy to mini-mize the danger factors and risk level is developed for articulated degree of freedom for multi activities of vessel. Simulations and experiments demonstrate the efficacy of this approach. The aim of this research is to introduce and develop an assistant system by analyzing ships activities in real time from land aspect.

We investigated the epidemiology of musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) among a complete cross-section of 330 nurses from a large Korean hospital, by means of a questionnaire survey (response rate: 97.9%). The prevalence of MSS at any body site was 93.6%, with symptoms most commonly reported at the shoulder (74.5%), lower back (72.4%), neck (62.7%), lower legs (52.1%) and hand/wrist (46.7%). Logistic regression indicated that nurses who undertook manual handling of patients were 7.2 times as likely to report MSS (OR 7.2, 95%CI 1.2–42.3, P = .0275), while nurses suffering from periodic depression experienced a 3.3-fold MSS risk (OR 3.3, 95%CI 1.3–8.3, P = .0104). Overall, our study suggests that Korean nurses incur a very high MSS burden when compared internationally. A greater commitment is needed to improve physical conditions, occupational tasks and psychosocial work issues among nurses in this country.
