From 2009 till 2016 one of the largest in the recent years hydrogeological project "Making programmes and geological documentation in order to specify hydrogeological conditions due to determining protection zone of Main Groundwater Basins (MGB)" has been led by Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute. The aim of the project was to document and describe MGBs as the most valuable and strategic groundwater reservoirs in Poland. Therefore set of documents for 101 MGBs and adaptation of 30 already existing pieces of MGBs documentation made before 2008 has been done. 131 documented MGBs encompass around 87 000 km2, which is 26.8% area of Poland. 20 groundwater basins didn’t meet all for MGB s established hydrogeological parameters, so they were reclassified to Local Groundwater Basins (LGB). 19 of all groundwater basins (15 MGBs and 4 LGBs) don’t need protection zones as the natural thickness of confining bed provides sufficient protection. For 112 of groundwater basins the protection zone has been determined. Their surface covers around 48 500 km2, which encompasses 15.5% area of Poland.
Many spatial databases storing the information on the occurrence and characteristics of the groundwaters were created in the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute within the framework of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey. The information stored in these databases is shown by the e-psh internet portal. The portal was created in 2009 in the GeoMedia® SDI environment. The portal enables display of the data published in the form of the geoinformation services in different configurations. The newest version of the e-psh portal presents selected information from many hydrogeological databases like the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, Groundwater Main Reservoirs, Groundwater Bodies and Central Data Base of the Hydrogeological Data. It is planned to continue with the further development and update of the portal by adding new information layers.

Aktualnie realizowany jest na zlecenie Krajowego Zarządu Gospodarki Wodnej ogólnokrajowy program badawczy obejmujący udokumentowanie obszarów ochronnych dla 101 Głównych Zbiorników Wód Podziemnych (GZWP). Dokumentacje obszarów ochronnych GZWP opracowywane są w trzech etapach w latach 2009–2015 roku. Jednym z efektów prac będzie mapa obszarów ochronnych GZWP – wymagających objęcia różnymi formami ochrony – zakazy, nakazy i ograniczenia w zakresie użytkowania gruntów lub korzystania z wody, w celu ochrony zasobów wód tych zbiorników. W artykule zaprezentowano aktualny stan prac związanych z przygotowaniem bazy danych GIS o obszarach ochronnych GZWP. Baza ta prowadzona jest w ramach działalności Państwowej Służby Hydrogeologicznej (PSH) i będzie stanowić podstawowy materiał do wykorzystania wyników prac przy wprowadzaniu obszarów ochronnych GZWP przez dyrektorów Regionalnych Zarządów Gospodarki Wodnej i prezentacji informacji o GZWP.

At present there is ongoing all Poland research project ordered by the National Water Management Authority to document the protection areas for 101 Main Groundwater Reservoirs (MGR). Documentations of the protection areas are to be elaborated in three stages in years 2009–2015. One of the results of these works will be the map of the MGR protection areas – the areas with different forms of the protection like bans, orders and limitations in land or water use to protect resources of these reservoirs. The paper shows the present stage of works aimed at the preparation of the GIS database with the MGR protection areas. This database run by the Polish Hydrogeological Survey will be the major tool in the MGR protection areas introduction by the directors of the Regional Water Management Authorities as well as for the presentation of the information on the MGR.

Baza danych GIS MhP jest prowadzona w Zakładzie Hydrogeologii Regionalnej i Gospodarowania Wodami Podziemnymi Państwowej Służby Hydrogeologicznej w Państwowym Instytucie Geologicznym – Państwowym Instytucie Badawczym. Po zakończeniu realizacji pierwszej, arkuszowej edycji Mapy hydrogeologicznej Polski w skali 1:50 000 dokonano przeniesienia baz danych poszczególnych arkuszy MhP do jednolitej i scalonej przestrzennie komputerowej bazy danych GIS Mapy hydrogeologicznej Polski w skali 1:50 000 (GIS MhP). W ramach prac nad MhP podjęto realizację dwóch kolejnych grup tematycznych według stosownych instrukcji: Mapa Hydrogeologiczna Polski – Pierwszy Poziom Wodonośny – Występowanie i Hydrodynamika oraz Mapa hydrogeologiczna Polski – Pierwszy Poziom Wodonośny – Wrażliwość i Jakość.

The database of Hydrogeological Map of Poland in Geographic Information System (GIS HMP) is managed by the Polish Hydrogeological Survey run by the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute. The Hydrogeological Map of Poland 1:50 000 represents a cartographic image of hydrogeological as well as economic and sozological conditions connected to the groundwater endangerment and protection. The map includes descriptional data and forms nationally standardised database of groundwater occurrences in Poland. Following the initial, sheet edition of the Hydrogeological Map of Poland, the consolidated and spatially unified digital database has been developed. In addition to the Hydrogeological Map of Poland the following additional constituents has been created: Hydrogeological Map of Poland – Top Aquifer – Occurance and Hydrodynamics; Hydrogeological Map of Poland – Top Aquifer – Vulnerability and Quality. GIS HMP database is systematically updated by comparing the information on the quality, dynamics and influence of any objects and economic undertakings on the state of the groundwater stored in the database to the results of actual (periodic) observations. Standard set of features, as per sheet edition of Hydrogeological Map of Poland 1:50000, is available in the Central Geological Archive of Polish Geological Institute.
The Hydrogeological Map of Poland (HMP) in 1:50,000 scale is an Intergraph technology based project. The HMPdatabase and its interfaces updating process was initiated in the year 2002. To make the project work a software environment was built to enable the execution of all tasks in the HMP’s sheet setup: import of vector and raster data, data verification (graphics and attributes), translation of GIS data into cartographic format, map printout and data storage. With the completion of the data collection process, the data management phase is to be initiated: data updating, addition of new information layers and distribution activity. These tasks will be run on the catchment and administration units basis. The paper is aimed to present these software solutions.
