W komunikacie przedstawiono zagrożenia wynikające z ekshalacji i migracji metanu, związanych z poszukiwaniem, eksploatacją i magazynowaniem węglowodorów. Przedstawiono zalety zastosowania powierzchniowego zdjęcia gazowego jako uniwersalnego narzędzia, mającego zastosowanie w górnictwie ropy naftowej i gazu ziemnego. Ponadto wskazano podstawy prawne regulujące jego wykonywanie.

Surface geochemical research in the form of a gas-photo constitutes an integral part of works related to the exploration and storage of hydrocarbons. An appropriately processed and interpreted image of surface distribution of methane concentration is a universal tool used for petroleum prospection, environment monitoring or in the evaluation of boreholes tightness and hydrocarbons storages. Thus, it is an important element which allows to identify any threats related to the migration and exhalation of methane. The legislator does not specify the research method. Having regard to the risk which may be posed to the environment and a human being as a result of methane migration and exhalation, it seems relevant to apply the best available techniques. This helps to keep a high level of protection of the environment and humans against possible consequences of any failures. To achieve this, surface geochemical research should be carried out with the use of methodology in determining the sampling points that takes into account the technical conditions and impact of the surrounding of the holes and boreholes. It is important to take the samples from a certain depth allowing to obtain a reliable geochemical image without the influence of external factors and to analyse them on stationary chromatographs which allow to obtain accurate results. The use of portable analysers is helpful, however they should not replace the analysis carried out on stationary equipment. Surface geochemical researches are of vital importance in oil and natural gas mining. Unfortunately, despite their usefulness in detecting threats, they are often marginalized and neglected.
