An extensive improvement of our low field polarizer is described. It produces 3He gas polarized up to 40% in a 6 h decay time storage cell. Production rate was raised by a factor of 10 to 4-5 scc/min thanks to the implementation of a new 10 W laser and a new design of a peristaltic compressor, easier to handle. Some applications of polarized gas are also presented: dynamic images of gas inhalation in the rat as well as a static image of human lungs using hyperpolarized gas were obtained.

The applications in basic science of optical surface devices for atoms are reviewed, with the emphasis on the optical dipole mirrors. The example of experimental realization of such a mirror constructed in our group is shortly presented. Some methods used in its characterization are shown.

Content available remote Hyperpolarized 3He gas production for magnetic resonance imaging

A portable 3He gas polarizer based on metastability exchange optical pumping is described. It produces 75 ml of highly polarized 3He gas at the pressure of 100 mbar, by implementing a non-magnetic peristaltic compressor, which transfers the 3He gas from the low-pressure optical pumping cell to the storage cell. About 30% polarization at 1 mbar is achieved in the optical pumping cell in a single run, and 20 compression cycles are needed to reach the final pressure in the storage cell. After adding a buffer gas up to the atmospheric pressure, the mixture is used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments. Preliminary images of phantoms and of the rat lungs in vivo confirm the usefulness of the 3He gas polarizer in MRI applications.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with hyperpolarized 3^He is a new method of studying structure and function of lungs. We present a novel low field MRI system based on permanent magnet and the 3^He polarizing unit being built in Krakow. Our system is designed to perform experiments on small animals (rats).
